Women's Water Polo

Women's Water Polo Turned Back by Connecticut College, 16-4

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team fell to Connecticut College, 16-4, this morning at host Grove City College's James E. Longnecker Competition Pool in Grove City, Pa.

The Lyons slip to 0-9 on the season, while the Camels improve to 1-9.

Junior attacker Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead Wheaton, while first year attacker Claudia Gagné (Orlando, Fla.) tallied a goal, drew three exclusions and came up with a steal. Sophomore attacker Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) scored a goal and added an assist and a pair of steals. First year goalie Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) made 13 saves in net for the Lyons.

Senior driver Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) led Conn. College with a game-high five goals, while first year driver Kendall Halfacre (Aurora, Colo.) netted three goals. Sophomore 2-Meter Sarah Nagel (Honolulu, Hawaii) also found the back of the net three times. Junior goalie Maddie Baybeck (Ann Arbor, Mich.) recorded eight saves in the first three quarters of action, before yielding to junior Grace Isola (San Mateo, Calif.), who stopped three shots in the fourth quarter.

Wheaton got on the board first with a score from Gagné to give the Lyons a 1-0 edge with 6:42 to play in the opening quarter. The Camels ripped off nine unanswered goals, fueled by four from Luna, to take a 9-1 advantage with 3:30 left in the third quarter. 

Ritting cut the deficit to 9-2 for Wheaton just 24 seconds later, before Connecticut College scored four straight markers, including a pair from Nagel, to increase its advantage to 13-2 with 4:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Lyons scored two of the next three goals with both coming from Brown to pull them within 14-4 with 2:58 showing on the fourth quarter clock. The Camels tallied the final goal of the game on a score from sophomore utility player Carly Schneider with 28 ticks left in the contest.

Wheaton returns to the pool later today when it takes on Grove City at 2:30 p.m.
