Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team fell to Austin College at neutral host Washington & Jefferson College's Henry Natatorium in Washington, Pa.
The Lyons fall to 0-15, while the Kangaroos improve to 6-8.
Sophomore attacker Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) and first year center Avary Guge (Winchester, Calif.) each netted a pair of goals for Wheaton. Ritting added five steals and a drawn exclusion, while Guge picked up a steal. First year attacker Claudia Gagné Orlando, Fla.) scored a goal and drew four exclusions and first year attacker Toni Munguia (Temecula, Calif.) netted a goal in addition to coming up with a trio of steals. First year keeper Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) made 12 saves and added a steal.
Austin was led by senior center Bianca Gallegos (Albuquerque, N.M.) with three goals, while senior attacker McKenna Malone (Flower Mound, Texas) scored twice. Junior utility player Joslyn Dimitri (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) and sophomore attacker Sophia King (Tomball, Texas) each netted a pair of goals for the Roos.
Austin scored the first 11 goals of the game, including all seven of the first quarter's markers. Gallegos sparked the Kangaroos' first quarter outburst with three goals. Junior attacker Morgan Evans (Houston, Texas) found the back of the net at the 3:09 mark of the second period to give the Kangaroos an 11-0 advantage. Munguia put the Lyons on the board with 1:53 left in the opening half to make it 11-1.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter to set the score at 13-3 in favor of Austin. Malone and Ritting exchanged goals to begin the quarter, before King and Gagné netted a goal each. Dimitri and sophomore attacker Clara Koenig (Cypress, Texas) sandwiched goals around a score from Ritting to increase the Kangaroos' cushion to 15-4 with 5:17 remaining in the game. Wheaton came alive with four of the next five goals, including two from Guge, to pull it within 16-8 with 32 ticks left in the contest. Dimitri tallied the final marker of the day for Austin.
The Lyons return to the pool for an 11:45 a.m. contest with Macalester College, while the Kangaroos take on Connecticut College at 2:00 p.m.
