Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis Downed by No. 11 Babson, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was swept 7-0 by number 11 ranked Babson College in Sunday afternoon's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match in Beard Field House.

Wheaton falls to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC with the loss, while Babson improves to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC with the win.

All three doubles pairs for Wheaton suffered the same fate; a 6-2 loss to a Babson duo. The Texan tandem of seniors Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) was beaten by the Babson pairing of sophomore Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first year Elizabeth Shu (Sugar Land, Texas) in the first doubles. Juniors Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) experienced the same in the second doubles as they fell to sophomore Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and first year Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.). Junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H) and first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) dropped the third doubles match to junior Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and senior Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) to cede the doubles sweep to the Beavers.

With a 1-0 lead in hand, the Beavers carried their momentum into the singles matches. Greenlee was up first in the number one singles against first year Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine). The senior started on the back foot as she dropped the first point, but quickly evened the score 1-1. The first set fell for the Babson rookie as Sikharulidze pushed back to win 6-2. The first year repeated the effort in the second set as she cruised to a straight-set win over Greenlee.

Shu and Haraj-Sai tangled in the second singles, but the Lyon fell in straight-sets to the Beaver rookie. Ortiz suffered the same fate as she also fell in straight-sets to first year Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) at number three singles. Hollis faced sophomore Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) at fourth singles and dropped the first set 6-1. Hollis improved in the second set, but still came up short as she fell 6-2. Both Wilson and Robinson fell in straight-sets in the final two singles matches to complete a strong day for Babson. The top-15 ranked Beavers claimed victory 7-0.

Wheaton will stay in Norton for its next match as it hosts Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 p.m. Babson will face number 22 Brandeis University at home on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
