BOSTON, Mass. — Senior attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) tallied a game-high seven points, including five goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team to a 15-10 victory over host Emmanuel College (Mass.) this evening at Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Saints dip to 4-3.
Wheaton owned a 26-19 shot advantage. Emmanuel committed 24 turnovers and was successful on just 14 of 19 clear attempts.
Chamberlin added two assists, a ground ball and a draw control for the Lyons, while junior attacker Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.) netted three goals and assisted on another. First year attacker Kaydie O'Neil (Sturbridge, Mass.) recorded four points, including a trio of goals, in addition to a season-high five caused turnovers, three ground balls and a pair of draw controls. Senior defender Katie Hallee (Norway, Maine) registered a game-high seven draw controls to go with two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior goalie Jenna Langan (Lincoln, R.I.) stopped four shots for Wheaton.
The Saints were led by senior midfielder Madeline Wright (Mattapoisett, Mass.) with four goals and seven draw controls, while senior middie Avery Robillard (Rowley, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, picked up two ground balls, caused a turnover and added two draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Ella Stein (Ipswich, Mass.) contributed with a goal, an assist, three ground balls, four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Keira Walsh (Nashua, N.H.) registered six saves for Emmanuel.
Sophomore attacker Emilia Ferraro (Burrillville, R.I.) scored the final goal of the third quarter to pull the Saints within 10-9 before the end of the quarter. The Lyons reeled off the first four goals of the fourth quarter and five of the six markers netted in the period to close out the contest with a 15-10 win. O'Neil led the offensive outburst with two of the first three scores of the quarter to give Wheaton a 13-9 margin with 4:54 to play in the game. Sophomore midfielder Claudia Shoemaker (Woodstock, Vt.) scored just 50 seconds later to add to the Lyons' lead before Robillard scored Emmanuel's final goal of the night to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 3:20 showing in the period. Qua countered with the last goal for Wheaton with 86 seconds remaining in the contest.
Prior to the Lyons' offensive surge in the final quarter, Wheaton never trailed in the game, but did not lead by more than two goals as both sides traded scores throughout the first three quarters of play. Junior midfielder Annemieke Buterbaugh (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Chamberlin opened the game's scoring with back-to-back goals to give the visitors a 2-0 lead with 7:43 left in the first quarter. Wright countered with a pair of goals for the Saints to knot the match at 2-2. It was the first of three ties in the game, before O'Neil gave Wheaton the lead for good at 5-4 with 9:43 showing in the second period. Sophomore midfielder Alexis Antonellis (Lyme, Conn.) followed with a score with 6:21 to go in the quarter to give the Lyons a two-goal advantage at 8-6.
The teams traded goals through the end of the half with Wright netting a marker with 55 ticks left in the quarter to pull Emmanuel within 7-6 at the intermission.
The third quarter picked up where the second quarter left off with each squad exchanging scores. Chamberlin netted the first marker of the third period to give Wheaton an 8-6 advantage with 9:54 to play in the quarter, before each team responded in kind until Ferraro tallied the final goal of the quarter to keep it a one-goal contest for the Saints.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, March 21 when they travel to Newport, R.I. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Salve Regina University at 12:00 p.m., while Emmanuel heads to Standish, Maine on the same day to face Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at the same time.
