KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Ten different hitters collected at least a hit, including senior right fielder Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.), who knocked in three runs to help lead the Wheaton College softball team to a 15-0 victory over Carlow University this afternoon at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of The Spring Games.
The Lyons improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Celtics fall to 1-8.
Wheaton rapped out a season-high 19 hits and six different players registered multi-hit outings. The Lyons scored eight runs in the second, three in both the third and fourth frames and one in the fifth. The game was halted after five innings, due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Arcand was 2-4 with a double and a run scored for Wheaton, while junior second base Taylor Barry (Hadley, Mass.) was 3-4 with two RBI, a double, three runs scored and a stolen base. Senior first base Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) also collected a trio of hits and knocked in two runs to go with a walk and a run. Junior center fielder Gabby Reinbold (Sharon, Mass.) reached base four times, going 3-3 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Junior starting pitcher Sofia De La Rosa (Middle Village, N.Y.) hurled five innings of three-hit ball and did not walk a batter, while striking out six to earn the win and improve to 3-2.
Senior second base Mackenzie Egley (Shelocta, Pa.), senior starting pitcher Tatum Wiggs (Boron, Calif.) and first year catcher Deborah Garza (San Antonio, Texas) were all 1-2 for Carlow at the plate. Wiggs (0-4) was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and two walks in addition to fanning two batters in one and a third innings of work.
The Lyons sent 14 batters to the plate in the second and eight of them scored for an 8-0 advantage after two innings of play. First year left fielder Julia Miller (Cheshire, Conn.) knocked in the game's first run with a single to center field, before Arcand walloped a bases clearing three-run double to center field to give Wheaton a 4-0 margin. The Lyons continued to put the pressure on with RBI singles from junior shortstop Ella Molinari (Grafton, Mass.), Blankenheim-Brown, senior catcher Riley Dolan (Coram, N.Y.) and Reinbold to increase Wheaton's cushion to 8-0.
The Lyons added three more runs in the third to take an 11-0 lead with the benefit of an error and a run-scoring ground out by first year designated player Mady Bryan (Halifax, Mass.).
Wheaton enjoyed another multi-run frame in the fourth to increase its advantage to a comfortable 14-0. Barry and Blankenheim-Brown both knocked in runs during the inning in addition to the final run of the frame coming courtesy of an infield error. A Barry double to left field knocked in Reinbold with the last run of the contest in the fifth inning to give the Lyons 15 runs.
Wheaton returns to the diamond later today when it plays Gordon College at 3:45 p.m., while the Celtics take on Thomas College (Maine) at 3:30 p.m.
