CASSELBERRY, Fla. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team kept the momentum on their side as it won again in Florida. This time the Lyons took down Hampden-Sydney 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon, despite losing the doubles point.
Wheaton improves to 5-2 on the year with the win, while the Tigers fall to 3-4 on the year.Â
Junior
Jaime Gálligo (Madrid, Spain) and first year
Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) linked up for a shutout in first doubles, starting the Lyons off with a 6-0 win. The second and third doubles pairings had a bit more trouble with the Tigers, however. Junior
Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore
Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) were tripped up by the Tigers' tandem of senior Casey Coffey (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore Emerson Rice (Columbia, S.C.) as they fell 6-3 in the second doubles. Junior
Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and junior
Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) suffered the same fate in the third doubles, falling 6-1 to first year Slade Funderbunk (Camden, N.C.) and first year Sam Robinson (Charlotte, N.C.) to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers.
Van Dyke was the only Lyon to drop his singles match, but there were zero Lyons that had an easy time in their matches. Four of the six games went to a third set, with Murray the only Lyon to win his singles match in straight-sets (6-3, 7-5).Â
Gálligo took on junior Thomas Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) in the first singles and took the first set with little drama, 6-3. The second set saw Davis make a few adjustments from the first, resulting in him taking the frame 6-3 to force a third set. Gálligo tightened up his game in the third, claiming the deciding point 10-5.Â
Munoz dropped his first set to Rice 6-3, but came back to win the second 6-4. The Parisien hit his stride in the third set, claiming victory with a 10-2 win.Â
Wyshner made quick work of sophomore Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian, Va.) in the first set, winning 6-1. The second set saw Fogle finish first at 6-4, but he was unable to carry that momentum into the third as Wyshner cleaned up the game with a 10-5 win. Berteaux was a bit less successful in his first set, dropping it 6-1 to Robinson. He fought back for a 6-3 win in the second set before wrapping up the victory with a 10-3 win in the third. His singles win secured a 5-2 victory for Wheaton, keeping their record in Florida spotless.
Wheaton will take on their namesake counterpart in Wheaton College (Ill.) tomorrow at noon in Sanford, Florida. Hampden-Sydney will take on Wabash in Orlando tomorrow at 6:30 pm.
