NORTON, Ma -- Senior attack
Charlie Goodrich (Fairfield, Conn.) notched his 100th point for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team as the Lyons took down Massachusetts Maritime Academy 17-10 on Nordin Field Wednesday evening.
Wheaton bounces back from their loss to Bates to improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Buccaneers suffer their first loss of the season to fall to 2-1.
Goodrich finished the day with three goals and one assist for a four point night to give him 101 points in the Blue and White and 107 for his career, including six points with Roanoke College. Junior attackman
Theo Stamatel (Plainville, Mass.) finished with the game-high in points with three goals and four assists. Senior
Emmett Edwards (Sunderland, Vt.) scored five times to lead the Lyons in goals, and added one assist for good measure. Junior
Evan Paturzo (Bellingham, Mass.) took home five points including a hat-trick of goals and two assists, while fellow junior
Evan Borchert (Littleton, Colo.) made 16 saves in 57 minutes.
Senior Daniel Kane (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Buccaneers with four goals and two assists. Junior Quinn Mucha (Barnstable, Mass.) and sophomore Chilton Cabot (Concord, N.H.) each had two goals, with the former adding one assist. First year Nicholas Hall (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) had a busy day in the crease as he made 13 saves on 30 shots faced.
Wheaton had a scorching hot start to the game, starting with a goal from Edwards just three minutes into the contest. Stamatel made it two a few minutes later, and Edwards found his second with six minutes to play in the frame. The Lyons defense must have been getting bored, as the Buccanners scrounged together only four shots in the first quarter. Goodrich found the back of the net with five minutes left, and a man-up goal from Paturzo with 37 seconds left gave the Lyons a huge 5-0 lead after one.
The visitors came out with a newfound energy in the second, but the defense held strong as Borchert made five saves in the opening five minutes. Cabot finally slipped one by the Lyons netminder to put his team on the board midway through the quarter. Goodrich swept away the score with a goal of his own before Wheaton scored two more in the final minute, including Goodrich's 100th point, to take a 9-1 lead into halftime.
Massachusetts Maritime showed their strength in the third quarter as they kept the Lyons to only two goals. They managed to score twice themselves, making it 11-3 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Stamatel scored in just nine seconds to lead off the fourth quarter, leading to a very fired up Wheaton sideline. Mucha scored directly off of the face-off to put a quick end to the elation, and the Buccaneers scored twice more unanswered to bring themselves within six. Paturzo scored to break up the Maritime momentum, but three more goals went unanswered by the Lyons. Senior
Karter Noyes (Manchester Central, Vt.) stopped the bleeding with a goal, which was quickly followed up on by Paturzo's third. Edwards scored again when the Lyons went man-up, and junior
Lucas Mehlhorn (South Portland, Maine) gave the Lyons a 17-9 lead with his first goal of the game. The Buccaneers scraped a goal together with 95 seconds to play, but they were well behind the Lyons with too little time to mount a meaningful comeback. The Lyons took their sixth win of the season 17-10 after all was said and done.
Wheaton will return to Nordin Field this coming weekend as they face Babson on Saturday at 4:00 pm for their first NEWMAC contest. The Buccaneers will take on their maritime rival on Saturday at 11:00 am at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine.
