Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Maintains Hot Start with 10-6 Win at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team kept the hot start to their 2026 going with a strong road win against Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field in Bristol, R.I. The Lyons took a 10-6 win over the Hawks, lifted by a hat-trick from senior attackman Emmet Edwards (Sunderland, Vt.).

The Lyons improve to 3-0 on their season so far with the win, while the Hawks remain in search of their first victory after falling to 0-2 on the year.

Edwards led Wheaton with four points including three goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Evan Paturzo (Bellingham, Mass.) was hot on his heels with two goals and an assist of his own. Both sophomore middie Zac DiLauri (Parsippany, N.J.) and senior attacker Charlie Goodrich (Fairfield, Conn.) each scored twice, while junior attackman Theo Stamatel (Plainville, Mass.) finished the game with a goal and three assists. Junior defender Henry Stamatel (Plainville, Mass.) finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior goaltender Evan Borchert (Littleton, Colo.) made 12 saves to continue his great start to the year.

Senior Nick Cotting (Holliston, Mass.) was the only Hawk to score multiple goals, finishing with two. Junior Matt Kennedy (Cumberland, Maine) finished with four points to lead his team, scoring once and adding three assists, but the effort was not enough to stop the Lyons. Senior goaltender Aaron D'Aversa (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) made six saves while letting 10 slip past.

Wheaton trailed early in the match after Roger Williams junior Brady Lee (Mattapoisett, Mass.) scored in just 52 seconds to start the game. The Lyons evened the score, as the Hawks goaltender turned the ball over in his own end, giving Stamatel an opportunity to tie the game. The opportunity was not wasted, and the score was even once more. The goal sparked a five-goal blitz, including the final four scores of the opening quarter and the first goal of the second period to give Wheaton a 5-1 lead. Paturzo and DiLauri each found the net twice during the run that gave the Lyons the lead for good.

Roger Williams entered the second quarter with much more resistance on defense, but DiLauri would prove too hard to handle as he slipped away to score his second goal of the game with 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Cotting answered with another goal for the Hawks to make it 5-2, and Kennedy scored his first of the season soon after. The Lyons slowed down the Hawks in the remainder of the frame and went to the locker rooms ahead 5-3.

Roger Williams junior Carter Shelton (Castle Rock, Colo.) was the first to score in the second half, putting the Hawks within one goal after three unanswered markers. The Lyons responded 39 seconds later as Edwards got on the stat sheet with a goal to regain the two goal lead. A bit over a minute later, Wheaton expanded its lead once more as Stamatel found Edwards on the man-up to make it a 7-4 lead.

The Lyons all but put the game away inside of the first minute of the fourth quarter as Edwards scored in 24 seconds and Goodrich added another just 13 seconds later. Wheaton found themselves down a man midway through the final frame, giving the Hawks the room they needed to find another goal. Cotting scored again with four minutes left, but his late effort was erased by a Goodrich goal less than two minutes later. Borchert and the defense held fast for the remainder of the game and the Lyons came away with an emphatic 10-6 win.

Wheaton remains on the road with a return to Rhode Island on Wednesday, February 25 as it takes on Johnson & Wales University in Providence at 4:00 p.m. Roger Williams will play their second NEWMAC team in a week as they travel to Boston for a game against Emerson College on February 27 at 6:00 p.m.
