Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Women's Water Polo Warded Off by California Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team took on the hosts, California Lutheran University in the second half of their doubleheader on the Regals' campus on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Regals by a score of 26-1.

The Lyons fall to 0-2 on the year, while Cal-Lutheran improves to 2-6 on their year.

Wheaton was outshot by the Regals 41-15 and earned four steals to the Regals' 20.

Sophomore attack Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) led the Lyons with the only goal for Wheaton and seven total shots while also snatching a pair of steals. Senior Josephine Basco (Painesville, Ohio) earned the assist for the Ritting goal. Junior Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) picked up two shots while her teammate, first year Claudia Gagné (Orlando, Fla.), matched the tally with two shots of her own. Junior goalie Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.) made one save in the contest.

Senior Lauren Lohmeier (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the game with five goals and three assists. Senior Jacquline Brandon (Makawao, HI.), junior Olivia Hurley (Fresno, Calif.) and freshman Aleaha Gonzalez (Commerce, Calif.) each scored three goals for the Regals, piling on to an offensive heavy performance. Junior goalie Sophie Raquel (Naperville, Ill.) made seven saves and allowed only one goal in the game.

California Lutheran hit the ground running following the opening spring, scoring 11 unanswered goals in the opening quarter. Seven individual players scored to give the hosts a commanding lead.

The Lyons tightened up on defense in the second quarter, keeping the Regals to only six goals scored. The third quarter was much the same, as the Regals put six in the back of the net to increase their lead.

Wheaton would finally get on the board in the fourth quarter, as Ritting and Basco linked up through the offensive end to slip the ball by Raquel with 5:48 remaining in the fourth. They would also hold the Regals to only three goals, the fewest they scored in any quarter of the game.

The Regals scored twice more before the end of regulation to make it a 26-1 final score.

Wheaton will take on Caltech at Stanford tomorrow at 1:00 pm Eastern. The Regals will get the later start as they play Concordia at 5:00 pm Eastern.
