THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team was turned back by California Institute of Technology, 15-5, this afternoon at host California University Lutheran's Samuelson Aquatics Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif. on the second day of the Tina Finali Tournament.
The Lyons slip to 0-3 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-2.
Cal Tech owned a 33-17 shot advantage and held a 16-7 margin in steals over Wheaton.
Sophomore attacker Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) led the Lyons with a pair of goals, three drawn exclusions, a pair of field blocks and a steal. First year attacker Claudia Gagné (Orlando, Fla.) netted a goal and assisted on another to go with a drawn exclusion and a steal, while junior attacker Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) scored a goal, added two steals and a drawn exclusion. First year goalie Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) recorded nine saves for Wheaton.
Senior center Mia Mutadich (London, U.K.) tallied seven points, including four goals, in addition to three drawn exclusions and a pair of steals for the Eagles. Junior attacker Emma Titus (Hood River, Ore.) scored four goals and added an assist, a drawn exclusion and a steal. Senior attacker Madelyn Gilbert (Clovis, Calif.) racked up five points with a pair of goals and three assists, while adding a game-high five steals and a drawn exclusion. Senior keeper Mahi Ravi (Mountain View, Calif.) stopped three of six shots and sophomore goalie Cecilia Moxley (San Diego, Calif.) turned away one of three shots.
Cal Tech netted the first four goals of the game, including all three in the opening quarter, paced by a pair of goals from Gilbert. Wheaton got on the board when Romo found the back of the net with 6:18 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 4-1. The teams traded two goals apiece, including a pair from Mutadich and single scores from Gagné and Ritting to keep it a three-goal difference at 6-3 with 1:42 to go in the second period.
The Eagles netted the first nine goals of the second half, fueled by four scores from Titus, to increase their cushion to 15-3 with 6:32 remaining in the game. The Lyons capped the contest with the final two goals coming from Ritting and sophomore attacker Mackenzie Kirby (Blue Ash, Ohio).
Wheaton returns to play Concordia University Irvine at 3:00 p.m. EST, while Cal Tech hosts Occidental College on February 21 at 11:00 a.m. PST.
