Women's Water Polo Falls to Redlands, 15-1, in Season Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team was defeated by University of Redlands, 15-1, this afternoon at host California University Lutheran's Samuelson Aquatics Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif. In the opening round of the Tina Finali Tournament. 

The Lyons dip to 0-1 in their season opener, while the Bulldogs improve to 1-6.

Redlands outshot Wheaton, 36-20 and owned a 17-8 advantage in steals.

Sophomore attacker Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) netted the lone goal for the Lyons and came up with a game-high four steals, while senior attacker Josephine Basco (Painsville, Ohio) assisted on a goal. Sophomore attacker Isobelle Jennings (Leeds, U.K.) registered a pair of steals and first year goalie Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) made nine saves and added a steal in her collegiate debut.

Senior attacker Ainsley Killian (Beaverton, Ore.) tallied a game-high six points, including three goals and a drawn exclusion for the Bulldogs, while sophomore attacker Teagan May (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored three goals and added an assist. Senior center defender Gianna Ratto (Santa Rosa, Calif.) contributed with a pair of goals, two assists and four steals. Junior goalie Sofia Mather (Riverside, Calif.) stopped all five shots she faced in net in 16 minutes of action and first year Elena Sanchez Alcaraz (Tijuana, Mexico) turned away seven of eight shots in 16 minutes of play.

Redlands scored the first 13 goals of the match, before Wheaton cracked the scoring column.

The Bulldogs saw five different players score in the opening quarter to take a 5-0 lead. Redlands matched its total in the second quarter to double its advantage to 10-0. Sophomore center defender Aubree Nabors (Conroe, Texas) led the way with a pair of goals in the quarter. 

Redlands scored the first three goals of the third quarter, including a marker from senior center Aubrey Stevenson (Calimesa, Calif.) to give the Bulldogs a 13-0 cushion with 2:55 to play in the quarter. Ritting put Wheaton on the board on an assist from Basco with 51 ticks left in the third period.

May scored the game's final goal with 1:14 remaining in the contest for Redlands.

The Lyons return to action when they take on host Cal. Lutheran at 5:30 p.m. EST, while the Bulldogs face Concordia University Irvine later today.
