Leiva Named NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week Again

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer player Camila Leiva (Warwick, R.I.) was named the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week for the week of October 12-18, it was announced today by the league.

Leiva earns Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season to become the first Lyon to earn the honor multiple times in the same season since Lauren Konopka '08 was named NEWMAC Player of the Week twice during the 2005 campaign. Leiva's accolade also marks the first time that Wheaton women's soccer has earned multiple offensive weekly awards from the conference since 2014 when Julia Cipriano '16, Lauren Corigliano '15 and Kelsee Howes '15 were all selected during the season.

Leiva factored into four of the Lyons' five goals for the week with three markers and an assist in two matches. The forward also recorded the game-winning tally in both games for Wheaton. The sophomore began the week with an assist and a goal to break a 2-2 tie and give the Lyons a 3-2 win at Springfield College on October 14. A graduate of Moses Brown School, Leiva netted both goals in a 2-0 victory at Smith College on October 17.

For the season, the second-year standout has been an offensive juggernaut for Wheaton, ranking eighth in the nation in goals with 14 and 10th in points with 32, while standing 17th among NCAA Division III players with four game-winnings goals. Leiva leads the NEWMAC in all three categories in addition to placing fifth among league leaders with four assists. She has netted multiple goals in a game on four occasions and has currently notched at least one marker in four straight contests. Leiva has tallied at least one goal in 10 of 13 games this season.

Leiva transferred to Wheaton from Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) prior to this season and has played in 31 career contests, while making 19 starts. The Rhode Island native has tallied 16 career goals to go with five assists for 37 points.

The Lyons return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 21 when they host NEWMAC rival Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Mirrione Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
