SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — The Wheaton women's swimming & diving team won 11 of 13 events to score victories against host Mount Holyoke College (141-85) and Clark University (154-51) this morning in a double-dual meet at MHC Natatorium in South Hadley, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 3-5. Mount Holyoke defeated Clark, 152-66. The MHC Lyons are now 2-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 3-3.
Senior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.), juniors Kaleigh Morton (Milford, Conn.) and Anna St. Jean (Alexandria, Va.) each won a pair of events to lead Wheaton. The trio joined senior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio) to combine for a win in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet. Dalton opened in the backstroke, before yielding to Lambert-Shemo's breaststroke leg. Morton swam the butterfly and was followed by St. Jean in the freestyle anchor to touch the wall with a winning mark of 1:57.90.
Dalton won both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events for the Lyons. She turned in the top time in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:04.08, before winning the 500 with a mark of 5:32.02. Morton clocked in at 2:22.97 to win the 200-yard individual medley in addition to a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.91. St. Jean sprinted to wins in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. She topped Clark in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.54, but was second to Clark junior Abby Seguin (Delano, Minn.), who won the event against both schools with a time of 26.28. St. Jean's time of 57.10 was the fastest in the 100-yard freestyle.
Wheaton first year Margeaux Anselmi (Pearl River, N.Y.) dominated the 1000-yard freestyle by nearly 30 seconds with a time of 11:28.68 with her first effort in the distance at the collegiate level. She also added a fourth-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly. Lambert-Shemo added an individual win to her relay success, taking the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.56 after placing second in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Grace Chin (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) outswam all Clark competitors in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:09.49, but placed third against Mount Holyoke in the event. Junior Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) won the race for the home team with a time of 1:04.91. Chin also finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley
Mount Holyoke's other event win came on the three-meter diving board with a winning score of 181.13 from sophomore Katherine Upton (Cambridge, Mass.). First year Ella Kent (Framingham, Mass.) posted a score of 172.43 to place first on the one-meter board for the Lyons.
Wheaton closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, behind senior Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.), first year Lauren Bullins (Lenexa, Kan.), first year Ella Werbecki (Scituate, R.I.) and Anselmi's combined time of 4:00.24.
The Lyons return to the pool on Saturday, January 17 when they travel to Middletown, Conn. to compete against host Wesleyan University and University of Bridgeport at 1:00 p.m.
