BRISTOL, R.I. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team was edged by host Roger Williams University 3-2 (25-14, 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 13-15) this afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium on the campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.

The Lyons fall to 2-4 overall, while the Hawks improve to 2-5.

Roger Williams posted a slightly better hitting percentage than Wheaton during the match. The Hawks recorded a .163 hitting mark, including a .324 and .318 hitting percentage during the final two sets. Wheaton recorded a .154 hitting mark for the match, which included a .407 hitting percentage in the opening frame and a .267 hitting mark during the fourth set. The Lyons outnumbered the Hawks 59-40 in total kills, but the hosts made just one total attack error during their final two sets to play a factor as a difference maker in the outcome.

Senior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) posted her first double-double of the season with a season-best 18 kills to go along with a career-high 20 digs, while adding in a service ace. Senior outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) also recorded her first double-double of the season with a season-high 18 kills and 24 digs to go along with two service aces. Junior right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) swung for nine kills, while junior setter Ajsa Orbán (Budapest, Hungary) tallied a match-high 38 assists, while also tying a career-high five service aces and four kills. Junior libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) got down for a season-high 24 digs.

Senior outside hitter Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-high 14 kills, while adding season-high 14 digs and two service aces. Sophomore middle hitter Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) tied a season-high eight kills with two digs to go along with a pair of solo blocks and a block assist. Senior setter Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) recorded a double-double with a season-high 18 assists to go along with 14 digs and a pair of service aces, while junior defensive specialist Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) tallied a season-high 25 digs.

After a 6-6 start to the opening set, the Lyons tallied the next 10 of 13 points behind a pair of kills from senior middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) and two aces from Orbán to give Wheaton a 16-9 margin. The Lyons continued their momentum in the opening set with five of the next seven points to increase their lead to 21-11. After three straight points by the Hawks to make the score 21-14, the Lyons responded with the final four points of the frame, which included a pair of kills by Lyon to give Wheaton a 25-14 victory in the opening set, which also marked the largest lead of the match for the Lyons.

The second frame proved to be an extremely close set, marking the first of two sets which were won by a two-point margin by the Hawks. Wheaton got out to a 9-4 advantage and later maintained a 15-10 lead past the midway part of the second set. The Hawks battled back to tally three straight points to cut the Wheaton lead to 15-13. The Lyons responded by tallying eight of 12 points, which included three kills by Henn and a kill to go with a service ace by Orbán to increase Wheaton's lead to 23-17. However, the Lyons struggled to close out the second stanza committing six errors, while the Hawks added one kill each by junior opposite hitter Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Jackson, allowing Roger Williams to close out the set with the final eight points to steal a set two victory 25-23.

In the third frame, the Hawks continued their momentum, scoring the first five points of the set and later held a 10-5 advantage. After being down for the first part of the third stanza, the Lyons roared back by tallying seven consecutive points, including three kills by Henn, giving Wheaton a 12-10 lead. The Hawks responded by tallying the next four of six points, including a kill by senior outside hitter Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) to knot the match at 14-14. After a Hawks service error, which gave Wheaton a 15-14 advantage, Roger Williams ripped off eight consecutive points, including a kill and two solo blocks by West to take a 22-15 lead. Wheaton was determined to battle back in the match and tallied five of the next six points, including a kill by Lyon to cut the deficit to 23-20. However, similar to the previous set, Wheaton could not shake off the late-set errors by committing an attack error to go along with a mistimed set, which allowed the Hawks to take set three 25-20 for a 2-1 edge in the match.

Both teams battled evenly throughout the fourth stanza as the largest margin was no greater than four points in the frame. Wheaton owned an early 9-6 advantage, before the Hawks put together an 8-5 burst, including a kill by McGonagle to cap the Hawks scoring run and pull them even at 14-14. Scilbelli fired in a service ace to give Roger Williams a 20-19 edge in a tightly contested set throughout. Wheaton roared back to tally five consecutive points, three of which resulted in kills by Lyon to give the visitors a 24-20 advantage. The Hawks took advantage of back-to-back errors by the Lyons to cut the deficit to 24-22, but a kill by Orbán helped Wheaton force a fifth frame with a 25-22 win during the fourth stanza.

The Lyons got out to a 5-4 lead during the fifth set behind two kills from Lyon, but Wheaton could not maintain the lead as the Hawks rallied with six consecutive points, including a kill by Fish to give Roger Williams a 10-5 lead. The Lyons found their rhythm and turned the match in their direction when Wingler and Mazzanti fired a kill each, allowing the Lyons to tally the next five of six points in the frame to cut the deficit to 11-10. The Hawks were quick to respond behind two consecutive kills by Picchietti to increase the margin to 13-10. Wheaton made a late-push to close the deficit to 14-13 by tallying three of the next four points. Wheaton's late rally was halted when Jackson fired in a kill to close out the match to give the Hawks a 15-13 victory.

Wheaton returns to the court on Friday, September 12, when it travels to the University of Rochester to face Keuka College on neutral court at 4:00 p.m., while the Hawks head to Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina University on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m.
