WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was defeated by host Worcester State University, 2-0, this evening at Coughlin Field in Worcester, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 1-1 on the season, while the Lancers improve to 2-0.
The shots were even for both teams at 11-11, although Worcester State owned a 10-6 margin in shots on frame. Wheaton was awarded all three corner kicks in the match.
The Lancers wasted no time, getting on the board in just the third minute of the contest to take a 1-0 edge. Junior back Samantha Sharp (Peabody, Mass.) sent a cross to junior midfielder Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, Mass.), who carried the ball to the left corner of the goal mouth, before slipping a shot between the near post and the outstretched hand of the Lyon keeper, for the first marker of the night, just 2:31 into the game.
Magierowski scored again to notch her second career multi-goal effort and give the home team a 2-0 margin with 38:36 showing on the second half clock. She took a short cross from junior midfielder Emma Jacob (Billerica, Mass.) and then lifted a shot from 38 yards out that snuck over the Wheaton netminder and into the back of the net in the 52nd minute of play.
The Lyons looked to get on the board late in the second half when first year forward Karina Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I.) carried the ball from midfield, before unleashing a shot at the top of the box that skipped off the top of the cross bar and over the endline to keep the shutout alive for Worcester State with 13:36 to play. First year midfielder Kate Rafferty (Westerly, R.I.) also took aim with a high shot from 35 yards out with 96 seconds to play, but it was playable for the Lancers' keeper.
Senior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) finished with eight saves for Wheaton, while junior goalie Ella Gumienny (Douglas, Mass.) stopped all six shots she faced to record her 15th career shutout for Worcester State.
Senior forward Ali Roche (Maynard, Mass.) led the Lyons' offense with three shots.
Wheaton returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 6 when it travels to Keene, N.H. to take on Keene State College at 1:00 p.m., while the Lancers head to Fitchburg, Mass. to open the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference slate with a match against Fitchburg State University at 11:00 a.m.
