Women's Soccer Downed at Endicott, 2-1

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was nipped by host Endicott College, 2-1, this evening at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 4-3-0 for the season, while the Gulls improve to 4-4-1.

Endicott registered a 13-6 shot advantage, including 7-1 in the second half. The Gulls doubled up on Wheaton with a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Lyons got on the board first with their only goal of the match coming in the fifth minute of play. Senior forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) netted her fourth marker of the year just 4:53 into the game for a 1-0 Wheaton lead.

Endicott was held without a goal in the first half, but evened the score with a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Senior midfielder Alyssa McColl (Stoughton, Mass.) netted her first marker of the season with the PK to pull the home team even at 1-1.

The Gulls tallied the eventual game-winner with 12:17 left to play in the contest. First year forward Sofia Agudelo (Avon, Conn.) served a ball from the right side into the box, that was collected by first year midfielder Emma Spear (Needham, Mass.) in front of the net. Spear was able to knock the ball into into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal and a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute.

Senior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) made four saves for the Lyons, while sophomore starting goalie Amanda Cosgrove (Newton, Mass.) allowed a goal in the opening 34:27 of play for Endicott, before yielding to senior netminder Samantha MacCormack (Danvers, Mass.), who turned back the only shot she faced in the final 55:33 of action.

Wheaton returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 27 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference rival Clark University at 1:00 p.m., while the Gulls host University of Hartford on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
