BRIDGEWATER, Mass. –- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team boasted five double-winners and rolled to a 6-1 victory over host Bridgewater State University this afternoon at Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-3.
Wheaton swept doubles play to gain the first point of the dual match, before winning five of six singles to secure the win.
The Lyon first year tandem of Amelie Robinson and Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.) combined for a 6-2 triumph at number three doubles over the Bridgewater State junior pair of Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) and Fiona Clancy (Middleboro, Mass.). Wheaton seniors Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) turned in a 6-1 win at first doubles over Bear sophomores Emma Gibney (New Bedford, Mass.) and Aislyn Kelliher (Plymouth, Mass.). The Lyons completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at number two behind juniors Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) over the sophomore duo of Sarah Pothier (Rochester, Mass.) and Morgan Smith (Taunton, Mass.) for Bridgewater State.
Wheaton gained straight-set victories at first through fifth singles. Greenlee earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at number one over Gibney, while Haraj-Sai posted a 6-4, 6-0 effort at second singles over Kelliher. Ortiz dominated at number three, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Smith. Hollis was also impressive in a 6-1, 6-3 showing at fourth singles against Pothier. Robinson picked up her first collegiate singles victory at number five with a 6-3, 6-1 result against Bettencourt.
Sophomore Ava Alves (Taunton, Mass.) picked up the lone point for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles over Lyon senior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.).
Wheaton returns to play on Thursday, September 25 when it competes at 11:30 a.m. in the Grass Court Doubles Championships hosted by Salve Regina University at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., while Bridgewater State hosts Rhode Island College on September 20 at 12:00 p.m.
