Lyon Fuels Women's Volleyball's 3-1 Comeback Win over Rochester

ROCHESTER N.Y. – Senior outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) spiked for 14 kills and fired five aces to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team to a 3-1 comeback victory over host University of Rochester this evening at the UR Invitational at Louis Alexander Palestra in Rochester, N.Y.

The Lyons improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-7.

Wheaton overcame deficits of 18-14 in the second set, 18-11 in the third and 21-18 in the fourth set to win all three frames, en-route to the win. The Lyons hit .279 for the match, including .417 in the third frame, while Rochester posted a .188 hitting mark.

Lyon committed just two attack errors as part of a .444 hitting mark to go with five digs. Senior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) swung for 11 kills on a .241 hitting clip, added two aces and was a dig short of a double-double with nine. Junior right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) put away 10 kills and hit .368 for the match in addition to getting up for a pair of assisted blocks and a dig. Junior setter Ajsa Orbán (Budapest, Hungary) set for 18 assists and sophomore setter Elena Timo (Bourne, Mass.) set for 17 to direct the offense, while junior libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) got down for 10 digs and fired a trio of aces.

Senior outside hitter Rylee Bergeron (Pittsford, N.Y.) led all players with 22 kills, fueled by a .267 hitting clip and added two aces and nine digs for the Yellowjackets. Junior outside hitter Lilly Kraemer (New Hope, Pa.) put down seven kills and hit .235, while firing four aces, getting up for a block solo and picking up four digs. Junior setter McKenzie McDonald (Aiea, Hawaii) registered 32 assists, served up five aces and scooped up three digs and junior defensive specialist Lydia Weeks (Brentwood, Calif.) picked up nine digs for the home team.

Rochester took a 7-4 lead to open the first set, led by a pair of kills from Bergeron. Wheaton ripped off the next five points, including a trio of kills from Lyon, to take a 9-7 margin. The teams played within two points of each other before Lyon put down another kill to help maintain a 16-14 lead for the Lyons. The Yellow Jackets dominated the rest of the set, outscoring their guests, 11-2, fueled by three kills from Bergeron, to give the home team a 25-18 decision in the first frame.

Wheaton erased a five-point deficit in the second set and a seven point difference in the third frame to come back and win both sets to take a 2-1 match lead.

Junior middle blocker Paige Stephenson (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) tallied three kills as part of a 13-8 opening stretch for Rochester in the second set. The Yellowjackets later owned an 18-14 margin after a Stephenson kill, before the Lyons roared back to put Rochester on its heels with 10 straight points, including four aces from Lyon, to give the visitors a 24-18 advantage. The Yellowjackets got two points back, but Wingler put away the final kill to knot the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 set victory.

Wheaton scored the first three points of the third frame, led by a pair of kills from Henn, before Rochester tallied four straight points, including a pair of aces from McDonald, to take a 4-3 edge. The Yellowjackets owned their lead for the majority of the match.  The Lyons pulled even at 7-7 after a kill from Mazzanti, but Rochester put together an 11-4 stretch, paced by two kills from Bergeron, to take a seemingly comfortable 18-11 cushion. Wheaton repeated its heroics from the previous set and went on a blistering 11-3 run, backed by a pair of kills from both Henn and Lyon, to put Wheaton in front at 22-21. It was the Lyons' first lead of the set since they held a 3-2 edge. Stephenson put down a kill to even the match at 22-22 for the Yellowjackets, but Wheaton closed out the frame with three of the final four points, including a kill from Lyon to seal it at 25-23.

Rochester got out to an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set, buoyed by three kills from Bergeron. Wheaton responded with a 9-3 run, led by a pair of aces from Lyon and two kills from Henn, to give the Lyons a 12-10 margin. Junior outside hitter Maren Smith (New Woodstock, N.Y.) put down the final two kills of a 6-1 burst to reclaim the lead at 16-13 for the Yellowjackets. Rochester later maintained a 21-18 difference, but Wheaton came back again with seven of the final eight points, including a pair of kills from Mazzanti and the final kill of the night from Henn to give the Lyons their second win in as many matches for the day.

Wheaton returns to the court tomorrow when it takes on Buffalo State University at 11:00 a.m., while the Yellowjackets play Keuka College at the same time.
