Blankenheim-Brown Lifts Softball to 4-3 Walk-off Win over Coast Guard in NEWMAC Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Junior first base Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) gave the fifth-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team a 4-3 walk-off win over number seven seed United States Coast Guard Academy with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in third round of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship Tournament this morning at Briggs Field on the campus of host top-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 27-14 on the season, while the Bears end their season at 16-20-1.

The game marked the 200th postseason contest in program history for Wheaton, while the victory is their second of the tournament to give the Lyons multiple wins in the NEWMAC tourney for the first time since 2015.

Blankenheim-Brown was 2-4 with two runs batted for Wheaton, while senior right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) was 2-3. Senior left fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) contributed with a triple and two runs scored from the top of the lineup. Sophomore starting pitcher Sofia De La Rosa (Middle Village, N.Y.) earned the win to improve to 14-7 on the season after yielding three runs (two earned) on just five hits and no walks to go with nine strikeouts.

Junior first base Bridget Bartz (Arlington, Va.) paced Coast Guard at the plate, going 1-3 with two runs batted in, while first year center fielder Hayden Reilly (Prosper, Texas) was 1-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Junior starting hurler Dana Walker (Macon, Ga.) was charged with the loss and drops to 14-9 after giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and no walks to go with five strikeouts.

The Lyons played from behind for the majority of the game, before tying the game with two runs in the fifth to make it 3-3. The Bears opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first, before Wheaton got a run back in the bottom of the frame. Coast Guard added a run in the fifth to take a two-run lead.

Rohon opened the fateful seventh inning with a single to right and, one out later, senior center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Rohon advanced to third on a fielder's choice, before Blankenheim-Brown laced a single up the middle to score Rohon with the winning run.

The Bears got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Reilly opened the game with a double to left field, before sophomore left fielder Abriana Schmutz (Marysville, Ohio) served a single to left to put runners on the corners. Schmutz moved up to second on a passed ball, which proved to be crucial to the Bears' half of the inning. One out later, Bartz singled to left to drive in both runs.

Wheaton got a run back in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 2-1. Zito belted a triple to the gap in right center field, before Blankenheim-Brown singled just beyond the outstretched glove of the second base to plate Zito with the first run of the day.

Coast Guard tacked on a run in the fifth, getting production from the bottom of its lineup, to increase its margin to 3-1. First year second base Lauren Ragonese (Liverpool, N.Y.) ripped a single down the left field line to lead off the frame, before first year catcher Madeline Kibler (Effingham, Ill.) doubled to the gap in left center field to put both runners into scoring position with no outs. De La Rosa induced a ground ball to third that resulted in Ragonese being cut down at the plate on the play and Kibler moving to third. Reilly followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Kibler with the third run for the Bears.

The Lyons rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull even at 3-3. Rohon singled to right center to begin Wheaton's rally. Zito grounded to short, but there was no one at second to receive a throw, resulting in both runners being safe on the play. DiBacco reached on an infield error, enabling Rohon to score. Molinari grounded to short, but the throw home to get Zito wasn't in time to prevent the Lyons' tying run. Walker fanned the next two batters to limit the damage.

De La Rosa retired the final eight batters to give Wheaton's offense a chance to make its comeback.
