NORTON, Mass. — Sophomore starting pitcher Sofia De La Rosa (Middle Village, N.Y.) hurled a two-hit complete game shutout to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 2-0 win over visiting Wellesley College this afternoon in game one of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 23-10 overall and 8-7 in league play, while the Blue fall to 15-15-1 and 8-9.
Wheaton celebrated its senior class, which is also its starting outfield, prior to the game. The Lyons paid tribute to Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.), Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) and Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.).
Wheaton scored both of its runs in the third inning.
De La Rosa struck out two batters and issued a pair of walks over seven innings and improved to 12-5 with her sixth shutout of the year for the Lyons. Sophomore second base Taylor Barry (Hadley, Mass.) and sophomore third base Emma Boucher (Derry, N.H.) were each 1-3 with a run batted in. First year first base Madi Miller (Middle Village, N.Y.) doubled and singled in three at-bats, while Zito was 2-3 with a pair of stolen bases from the top of the lineup.
Sophomore starting pitcher Sara Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) drops to 6-7 on the season, but was excellent for Wellesley in the losing effort, giving up just two runs on seven hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts in six complete innings. Senior center fielder Charis Chung (San Gabriel, Calif.) and junior first base Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.) each went 1-3 to account for the only hits of the day for the Blue.
DiBacco drew a walk and sophomore shortstop Ella Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, before Barry dumped a single into center field to bring DiBacco around to score with the first run of the day in the bottom of the third for Wheaton. Boucher followed with a single of her own to plate Molinari with the Lyons' second score to give them a 2-0 margin.
De La Rosa did not allow a hit after a one-out Chung single in the third inning, but the Blue did look to threaten in the top of the sixth with a runner on first after Wicker drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. De La Rosa got out of the inning, unscathed when sophomore Jillian Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a soft liner up the middle that Barry snared going to her right and used her momentum to step on the bag at second to double up first year pinch-runner Natalie Nicol (Latexo, Texas) to end the inning.
Both teams play again in game two of the NEWMAC twinbill.
