NEWPORT, R.I. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team boasted four double-winners in a 6-1 triumph over host Salve Regina University this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at the Hall of Fame Tennis Club in Newport, R.I.
The Lyons improve to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in league play, while the Seahawks drop to 4-9 and 1-3.
Wheaton won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point in the dual match, before winning five of six singles matches to seal the victory.
The Lyon sophomore duo of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) teamed with Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) to earn a 6-2 decision at number two doubles over Salve Regina senior Natalia Vega (Speonk, N.Y.) and sophomore Madigan Murphy (York, Maine). First year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) and sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) battled to a 7-6 (1) triumph at third doubles for Wheaton over the senior tandem of Natalie Barros (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Elena Murdock (Westerly, R.I.) to gain the doubles point for the Lyons.
Haraj-Sai defeated Seahawk sophomore Stephanie Davis (Kinnelon, N.J.) in straight sets at number two singles, 6-3, 6-4. Hollis also won in straight sets over Vega at number four singles, in a 6-1, 6-3 result to give Wheaton the fourth point of the match to guarantee the win. Wilson had little trouble at fifth singles for the Lyons with a 6-1, 6-2 effort over Murdock. Brennan dominated at number six with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Barros.
Wheaton junior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) cruised to a first set 6-0 win at number one singles against Salve Regina sophomore Kaydin Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.). Pinto regrouped and battled to a 7-6 (4) triumph in the middle set, before Greenlee won the super tie-break in the final set, 10-4.
Davis combined with Pinto to earn the home team's only win in doubles action, defeating Greenlee and Lyon junior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas), 7-5.
Murphy picked up the Seahawks lone victory in singles action, outlasting Oritz at number three singles. Oritz opened the match with a 6-3 win, before Murphy bounced back with a 6-4 showing in the second frame. Murphy carried the momentum into the final set to gain a 10-5 win in the super tie-breaker.
Wheaton returns to the court on Tuesday, April 22 when it hosts NEWMAC rival Babson College on Clark Tennis Courts at 4:00 p.m., while Salve Regina travels to Weymouth, Mass. to play conference foe Emerson College tomorrow at 6:45 p.m.
