Box Score ERIE, Pa. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team broke the school record for goals in a game in a 25-11 defeat to Grove City College this afternoon at the PSB Invitational hosted by Pennsylvania State University Behrend at the Junker Center in Erie, Pa.
The Lyons fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Wolverines improve to 3-6.
Wheaton sophomore attacker Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) netted five goals, while first year center Ryanna Ritting (Perkaskie, Pa.) scored three times. Junior center Issabel Babikova (South Portland, Maine) tallied a pair of goals and first year utility player Isobelle Jennings (Leeds, U.K.) found the back of the net for the Lyons.
First year utility player Frances Baksa (Longwood, Fla.) led all scorers with seven markers for Grove City, while sophomore utility player Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa.) scored five times. First year driver Zoe Luttrell (Naperville, Ill.) netted three goals for the Wolverines.
Grove City scored the first four goals of the contest in the opening four minutes with senior driver Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) netting a pair of goals. Romo put Wheaton on the board at the 4:19 mark of the opening quarter to cut the margin to 4-1. Ritting kept the deficit at three with goals at 2:28 to make it 5-2 and 1:50 to keep the Lyons within 6-3. The Wolverines scored the next two markers, including a score from Tihanksy to increase Grove City's lead to 8-3, before Romo scored the final goal of the quarter with 15 ticks left to pull Wheaton within 8-4.
The Wolverines netted the first two goals of the second period, including a goal from senior driver Sam Logue (Hollister, Calif.) to bump their advantage to 10-4. Jennings tallied her first collegiate goal at the 5:08 mark of the quarter to cut the margin to 10-5 for the Lyons. Grove City tallied the next three goals with Tihansky giving it a 13-5 margin with 99 seconds left in the quarter, before Babikova and Baksa traded markers to establish a 14-6 halftime count.
The Wolverines took their first double-digit lead of the game with the first two goals of the third quarter, including a score from first year driver Emma Strahorn (Harleysville, Pa.), for the team's 16th goal at the 4:55 mark. Romo interrupted Grove City's scoring string with a goal coming at the 4:31 mark for Wheaton, but Grove City ripped off three more goals, capped by junior utility player Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va.) to give the Wolverines a 19-7 advantage with 1:28 showing in the third quarter. Romo notched the period's final marker with 28 ticks left to cut the difference to 19-8 for the Lyons.
Grove City opened the final quarter with the first five markers, fueled by a trio of goals from Baksa, to give the Wolverines their largest lead of the game at 23-8 with 4:09 remaining in the contest. Ritting scored two of the game's next three goals for the Lyons to pull them within 24-10, before Babikova recorded the game's final marker with just one tick left on the game clock.
Wheaton returns to action on Thursday, March 20 when it hosts Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m. for Senior Night at Balfour Natatorium, while the Wolverines host Austin College on March 28 at 10:20 a.m.
