Box Score ERIE, Pa. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team was defeated, 22-3, in its season opener this afternoon by Washington & Jefferson College at the PSB Invitational hosted by Pennsylvania State University Behrend at the Junker Center in Erie, Pa.
The Lyons dip to 0-1 on the season, while the Presidents improve to 4-3.
Senior center Izabella Agraz (Moraga, Calif.), sophomore attacker Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) and first year center Ryanna Ritting (Perkaskie, Pa.) each scored for Wheaton.
Washington & Jefferson was led by first year utility players Emmie Ratcliffe (Friendswood, Texas) and Autumn Woollcott (Grand Blanc, Mich.), who both tallied a game-high five goals. Senior attacker Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa.) netted three goals to help the Presidents' cause.
W&J netted the first six goals of the game in the opening three and a half minutes of play, paced by a pair of goals from Ratcliffe. The Lyons answered with three straight goals in a span of 2:28 with Agraz scoring at the four-minute mark, before Romo found the back of the net with 2:08 left in the opening quarter. Ritting scored her first collegiate goal with 92 seconds left in the period to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Presidents scored the final 16 goals of the afternoon, including the final marker of the opening quarter by Anthony to give W&J a 7-3 margin.
The Presidents scored all four goals of the second quarter, including the final two of the period from Ratcliffe to give Washington & Jefferson an 11-3 lead at the intermission.
The Presidents tacked on four more goals in the third quarter to increase their advantage to 15-3. W&J closed out the game with all seven markers in the fourth quarter, fueled by three scores from Woollcott.
Wheaton returns to action tonight at the Junker Center Pool when it takes on Connecticut College at 8:00 p.m., while the Presidents play host Penn. State Behrend at 5:30 p.m.
