WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior attackman Emmett Edwards (Sunderland, Vt.) had a game-high three goals to go with an assist to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's lacrosse team to a 15-9 victory over University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) this afternoon at USJ Lacrosse Field in West Hartford, Conn.
The Lyons improve to 5-1 on the season while the Blue Jays drop to 2-3.
Senior midfielder Jack Board (Westborough, Mass.), junior attacker Charlie Goodrich (Fairfield, Conn.), sophomore attackman Evan Paturzo (Bellingham, Mass.) and senior middie Charlie Racine (Oradell, N.J.) each added two goals for Wheaton in the win while Mike McLaughlin (Stoughton, Mass.) led the Lyons with two assists while also scoring a goal. Sophomore midfielder Chris Bodnaruk (Andover, Mass.) won 14 of 24 face-offs and led Wheaton with seven ground balls. Senior goalie Connor Almstrom (Cumberland, R.I.) made 12 saves.
The Blue Jays took an early 2-1 lead before Wheaton scored the final five goals of the first quarter and the first goal of the second to take a 7-2 lead with 12:53 left in the first half.
Goodrich and Racine each scored twice in the 5-0 run to end the first quarter.
Saint Joseph tallied four of the final six goals of the half, capped by a score from graduate student midfielder Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn.) with 22 ticks left in the half to cut the deficit to 9-6 at the intermission.
Board and McLaughlin tallied goals in the third to bump the Lyons' lead to 11-6. Graduate student attackman Ryan Paltauf (Southbury, Conn.) put another goal on the board for the Blue Jays, before Edwards found the back of the net twice and Paturzo scored to give Wheaton its largest lead at 14-7 with 12:03 remaining in the game.
Sophomore midfielder Brendan Tedeschi (Orange, Vt.) and Paltauf each had a pair of goals to lead Saint Joseph. Graduate student Trey McCann (Simsbury, Conn.) had 14 saves in goal for the Blue Jays.
The Lyons are back in action on March 15th when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Emerson College at 1:00 p.m. in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams. The Blue Jays will host Emmanuel College (Mass.) on March 15th at 1:00 p.m.
