Water Polo Defeated by Augustana, 25-1

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team closed out a Collegiate Water Polo Association weekend with a 25-1 loss to Augustana College (Ill.) this evening at host Grove City College's James E. Longnecker Competition Pool in Grove City, Pa.

The Lyons fall to 0-9 overall and 0-9 in conference play, while Vikings improve to 12-8.

Sophomore Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.) tallied the lone goal for Wheaton.

Sophomore center Alayna Ickert (Flower Mound, Texas) led all scorers with five markers for Augustana, while junior utility player Jersey Merrick (Chicago, Ill.) netted four goals. Junior attacker Mary King (Bakersfield, Calif.) contributed with three goals for the Vikings.

Augustana scored all 12 goals in the opening quarter, fueled by three markers from King. The Vikings added five more goals in the second quarter to take a 17-0 advantage at the intermission. 

Augustana tallied the first four goals of the third quarter with Ickert and Merrick each scoring twice to increase the Vikings' cushion to 21-0 with 3:01 left in the third quarter. Brown put the Lyons on the board with a goal at the 2:35 mark of the quarter to make it 21-1.

Augustana added four more goals in the fourth quarter to set the final.

Wheaton returns to the pool on Thursday, April 3 when it travels to New London, Conn. to take on Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m., while the Vikings host Pennsylvania State University Behrend on April 11 in the opening round of the CWPA Tournament.
