Box Score GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team was defeated by Carthage College, 10-4, this evening in a Collegiate Water Polo Association match at host Grove City College's James E. Longnecker Competition Pool in Grove City, Pa.
The Lyons slip to 0-6 overall and 0-6 in conference action, while the Firebirds improve to 3-19 and 1-7.
Senior center Izabella Agraz (Moraga, Calif.), first year center Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.), sophomore attacker Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) and first year Fiona Swift (Red Hill, Pa.) all tallied a goal for Wheaton.
First year attacker Mak Werner (Tinley Park, Ill.) led all players with a trio of goals for Carthage. Junior attacker Brenna Carstens (Coronado, Calif.) and first year attack Morrigan Bushroe each netted two goals.
The Firebirds tallied the first eight markers of the game, including all seven goals in the opening quarter. Werner led the opening charge with three goals for Carthage. Ritting cracked the scoring column for the Lyons with 4:52 left in the second quarter, before Romo followed with a score with just 21 ticks left in the first half to cut the deficit to 8-2.
The Firebirds scored the only two goals of the third quarter behind Carstens, just 30 seconds into the quarter, and first year attacker Xiomara Trejo (Chicago, Ill.) with 1:51 to go in the period to give Carthage a 10-2 advantage.
Wheaton closed out the match with two markers in the fourth quarter, getting scores from Swift with 4:16 to play and from Agraz with 3:23 remaining in the contest.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they take on Macalester College in Grove City at 9:30 a.m., while the Firebirds take on Connecticut College at 12:00 p.m.
