BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior starting pitcher Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) hurled a two-hit shutout and sophomore shortstop Taylor Barry (Hadley, Mass.) doubled in the winning run to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 1-0 win in the nightcap of a sweep over host Roger Williams University this afternoon at Paolino Field in Bristol, R.I.
The Lyons win their 10th in a row for their longest win streak since the 2015 team won 12 straight. Wheaton is now 14-2 on the season, while the Hawks dip to 7-7.
The teams combined for just six hits on the day.
Blankenheim-Brown issued just one walk and struck out six in seven complete innings to earn her second shutout of the season and improve to 5-1 for the Lyons. She was also 1-2 at the plate with a run scored and Barry was 2-3 in the game. Sophomore designated player Ella Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) had Wheaton's other hit in a 1-3 effort.
Sophomore shortstop Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) was 1-3 with a double to pace Roger Williams, while sophomore center fielder Vianna Chamberlain (East Providence, R.I.) was 1-2. Sophomore starting pitcher Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) was outstanding for the home team, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks, while fanning four batters in seven innings.
The Lyons scored the only run they would need in the top of the fourth inning. Blankenheim-Brown drew a one-out walk and Barry belted a double to left center and just like that, Wheaton owned a 1-0 lead that held up for the victory.
The Hawks threatened to tie the game in the sixth when Starratt doubled down the right field line to snap a string of 10 straight batters retired by Blankenheim-Brown. The Lyon starting hurler struck out the next batter to snuff out the threat. Blankenheim-Brown did not allow a runner past second base for the entire contest.
Wheaton returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 29 when it hosts Salve Regina University to open the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference slate with a Noon doubleheader at Clark Softball Field, while Roger Williams hosts Gordon College on March 28 at 2:30 p.m.
