WESTON, Mass. — Senior forward Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) netted 20 points to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team over host Regis College (Mass.), 64-54, this evening at Higgins Court in Weston, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Pride drop to 2-6.
Wheaton shot 37.1% (23-62) for the game, while Regis boasted a 45.8% (22-48) clip. The Pride committed 27 turnovers in the game.
A trio of Lyon seniors combined for 51 points for the visitors. Keyter was 9-14 from the floor and added four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while senior guard Kiki Walters (Fleetwood, Pa.) scored 19 points and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line to go with six boards, three assists and a game-high six steals. Senior guard Kennis Jasperson (Sacramento, Calif.) contributed with 12 points on 4-6 from the floor, including 4-5 from three-point range in addition to an assist and a rebound.
Senior forward Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led all scorers with a career-high 32 points on 13-17 shooting and added 14 rebounds for her fifth straight double-double in addition to two assists, a trio of steals and a blocked shot for Regis. Junior guard Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) chipped in with 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers, to go with three rebounds and an assist.
Wheaton faced a 16-10 deficit after one quarter of play, before dominating the second quarter by a count of 21-4 to take a 31-20 advantage. The Lyons netted the final 13 points of the quarter and were led in the period by Keyter, Walters and Jasperson with six points apiece.
Walters converted a layup at the 6:57 mark of the third quarter to increase Wheaton's lead to 37-22. Jasperson buried a trifecta to maintain the Lyons' lead at 40-25 with 5:52 showing in the third quarter. Zancan scored every point during a 7-2 spurt for the Pride to cut the deficit to 42-32 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. First year forward Katelyn Cadmus (Pawcatuck, Conn.) scored the final points of the quarter with a layup to give Wheaton a 46-34 cushion with one quarter to play.
Keyter later made a layup to bump the Lyons' margin to 50-36 at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter. Regis ripped off the next five points, capped by a layup from junior guard Kailyn Smith (Chelmsford, Mass.) to pull the Pride within 50-41 with 6:17 left in the game. It was as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest.
Zancan later made a layup to keep Regis within 59-48 with 1:59 showing on the fourth quarter clock, but Wheaton scored the next four points on four Walters' free throws to give the visitors their largest lead of the night at 63-48 with 75 seconds to go in the game. The Pride scored six of the final seven points to close out the game, including all six from Zancan to set the final at 64-54.
The Lyons opened the game with a 7-4 lead, before Perry knocked down a three-pointer to pull the home team even and ignite a 12-3 run to close out the quarter and give Regis a six-point lead at the quarter's end.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, December 6 when it heads to Middletown, Conn. to take on Wesleyan University at 2:00 p.m., while the Pride host Fitchburg State University on the same day at 5:00 p.m.
