SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) and first year Marcus Tran (Milton, Mass.) led the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team to a 150-144 victory over host Springfield College, while falling to United States Coast Guard Academy, 185-94, this afternoon in a double dual meet at Art Linkletter Natatorium in Springfield, Mass.
The Lyons are now 2-2 on the season, while Coast Guard improves to 5-0 and Springfield falls to 0-3.
Cullinan placed first overall in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.07, while finishing ahead of Springfield in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:59.32. Tran topped the field in the 100-yard backstroke with a clip of 53.39 in addition to defeating Springfield with a time of 48:02 in the 100-yard freestyle. Senior Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.) placed first against Springfield in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.99 and gave Wheaton a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke against Springfield with a clip of 55.31.
Juniors Jadyn Arnold (Oakland, Maine) and Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.) in addition to first year Abel Haller (Needham, Mass.) all registered first-place efforts against Springfield for the Lyons. Arnold out-touched the Pride in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.96, while Rice outswam Springfield in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:05.32. Haller clocked in at 2:19.72 to finish ahead of the Pride in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Wheaton's 400-yard freestyle relay closed out the meet with a win over both Springfield and Coast Guard with a time of 3:10.06, behind senior Brian Hixson (Scituate, Mass.), senior Will Larson (Iowa City, Iowa), Cullinan and Marcus Tran. The Lyons opened the meet with a win over the Pride in the 400-yard medley relay. Marcus and Andrew Tran, Cullinan and Hixson combined to post a mark of 3:31.19.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Saturday, November 15 when it heads to Lewiston, Maine to take on Bates College at 1:00 p.m.
