MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of first year Marcus Tran (Milton, Mass.) and seniors Will Larson (Iowa City, Iowa), Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) and Brian Hixson (Scituate, Mass.) was named the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Relay of the Week for the week of November 17-23, it was announced today by the NEWMAC.
The honor marks the third time that the Lyons have earned NEWMAC Men's Swimming Relay of the Week and the second time that they have earned the accolade with the 200-yard freestyle relay, which was the case for the week of October 27 to November 2. The same four swimmers were on all three relays, including the 400-yard freestyle relay named for November 3-9. Wheaton has been named the top weekly relay in all but one reporting period this season.
Wheaton's 200-yard freestyle relay squad placed first at the Chris Fisher Invitational, finishing ahead of Roger Williams University by more than two seconds with a time of 1:23.43. The Lyons' first three swimmers in the relay all recorded the fastest split during their leg. Tran swam a time of 21.08 to establish the lead for Wheaton, before Larson increased the advantage with a split of 20.96. Cullinan continued the Lyons' lead with a split of 20.63 and Hixson closed out the win with a split of 20.76 in the final 50 yards.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Friday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m. when it travels to Waterville, Maine to compete in the Maine Collegiate Swimming & Diving Winter Invitational.
