Cullinan Leads Men's SwimDive on Final Day of Chris Fisher Invitational

NORTON. Mass. — Senior Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) won an event and placed third in another to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team this evening on the final day of the Chris Fisher Invitational hosted at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

Roger Williams tallied 974.5 points over the two days to win the team crown, while Babson College scored 882 points. The Lyons accumulated 657 points to place third and Eastern Connecticut State University scored 339.5 points to finish fourth. 

Babson won four events, while Wheaton won three and Roger Williams captured an event. 

Cullinan swam to a first-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.25 and finished third in the 200-yard freestyle behind a time of 1:44.31. Junior Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.) won his only individual event for the Lyons with a time of 4:11.84. First year Marcus Tran (Milton, Mass.) placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.15 and added more points with a seventh-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle on a time of 1:45.59. Wheaton registered a winning mark of 1:32.68 in the 200-yard medley relay behind Tran, senior Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.), Cullinan and senior Brian Hixson (Sciutate, Mass.). Marcus Tran and Cullinan teamed with senior Will Larson (Iowa City, Iowa) and Hixson to place second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:06.80.

First year Nate Contreras (Coalville, Utah) scored big points with a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle and added more with a 4th-place effort in the 400-yard individual medley after touching the wall at 4:25.19.

Hixson placed among the top-five in two events, finishing third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.40 and was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 54.32. First year Abel Haller (Needham, Mass.) recorded a time of 4:22.20 to claim third place in the 400-yard individual medley and junior Andrew Gust (North Andover, Mass.) was fifth in the race with a time of 4:26.86. Larson scored individually for the Lyons, placing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle behind a time of 21.83, while Andrew Tran was sixth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:37.93 and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle with a clip of 22.45 and sophomore Koby Wulfmeyer (New Paltz, N.Y.) was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.50.

Wheaton returns to the pool on Friday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m. when it travels to Waterville, Maine to compete in the Maine Collegiate Swimming & Diving Winter Invitational.
