NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team controlled the entire game against visiting Gordon College on Saturday afternoon in Emerson Gym, downing the Fighting Scots 76-52 behind 16 points by junior guard
Dimetri Iafrate (Johnston, R.I.).
The win makes it four-in-a-row for the Lyons as they improve to 5-1 on the season. The Scots fell to 1-4 on the year with the loss.
Iafrate paced his team with 16 points on 6-9 shooting, including two three-pointers and four assists. Junior
Markus Nordin (Wenham, Mass.) was lights out from behind the arc, shooting 4-4 from three and adding a field goal on top to complete a 14 point performance. Senior guard
Sal Pedevillano (Parsippany, N.J.) also completed a double-digit performance, stacking up 11 points with a trio of three-pointers.
Gordon scored the first points of the game, but Wheaton immediately slammed the door shut on its guests with senior guardÂ
Tristan Herry (East Taunton, Mass.) knocking down a jumper. Gordon's only lead of the game quickly withered away as a layup by Iafrate and a three-pointer from Nordin helped drive the Lyons ahead 16-10. The floodgates opened after a Gordon timeout, with the Lyons immediately going on a 16-4 scoring run to expand their lead to 32-14. Pedevillano knocked down both of his free throws and Iafrate closed the half with a layup to put Wheaton ahead 38-20 at the half.
The Lyons came out of the break with a scoring flurry, boosted in part by a field goal and two three-pointers from Iafrate. Pedevillano added another score from downtown to give Wheaton a 27-point lead before the Fighting Scots could blink. The visitors eventually regained their footing, grinding away at Wheaton's lead to make it a 55-40 game. The Lyons did not take kindly to their opponent continuing to stick around. Sophomore
Sean Perri (West Roxbury, Mass) scored a quick five points to ensure the 20-point margin. Pedevillano drained another three, just ahead of one more triple from Nordin and a subsequent layup from the junior, giving the Lyons their largest lead of the night at 74-46. With under 90 seconds to play, the Scots were able to manage a few scores, but it was not enough to mount a meaningful comeback as they fell to Wheaton 76-52.Â
The Lyons continue to face Massachusetts non-conference opponents as they head to Boston to take on the University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
