BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) and first year Marcus Tran (Milton, Mass.) each won a pair of events to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team over host Bridgewater State University, 164.5-117.5, this afternoon at Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Swimming Pool in Bridgewater, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-1.
Wheaton won 10 of 16 events, including both relays and three 1-2-3 sweeps of individual events.
Cullinan won the 50-yard backstroke with a clip of 25.34 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.79, while Tran placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:47.85 and touched first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.88. The pair each helped the Lyons win a pair of relays as well. Tran opened the meet in the backstroke, swimming the opening 100-yards of the 400-yard medley relay, senior Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.) swam the breaststroke leg of the relay. Cullinan swam the butterfly and senior Brian Hixson (Scituate, Mass.) closed out the final 100-yard freestyle leg to complete a time of 3:33.93. Hixson was followed by Marcus Tran, senior Will Larson (Iowa City, Iowa) and Cullinan in the winning 200-yard freestyle relay time of 1:26.05 for Wheaton.
Andrew Tran contributed with 17 points for the Lyons, placing first in the 100-yard backstroke behind a clip of 55.63 in addition to second-place efforts in the the 50-yard butterfly and 50-yard breaststroke events for Wheaton. Hixson scored 13 points, placing first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:02.51and was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle behind Marcus Tran.
First year Abel Haller (Needham, Mass.) tallied 15 points for Wheaton, winning the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:27.91 and placing third in the 50-yard breaststroke and the 1000-yard freestyle. Junior Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.) piled up 12 points for the Lyons with a time of 10:20.28 to top the field by nearly a minute in the 1000-yard freestyle to open the individual events, before placing third in the 500-yard freestyle.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Saturday, November 8 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on host Springfield College and United States Coast Guard Academy in a double-dual meet at 11:00 a.m.
