Hamilton Holds Off Women's Volleyball 3-0

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) registered a double-double, but it was not enough for the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team in a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-23) loss to Hamilton College in a road non-conference match hosted by University of Hartford at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Connecticut on Friday evening.

The loss puts the Lyons at 10-14 overall on the season, while Hamilton improves to 7-10 with the win.

Henn led all hitters with 12 kills, adding 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. The senior hit .128 for the match and added a serving ace for 14.5 points. Senior outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) had a solid day at the net, finishing with nine kills on .143 hitting. She also picked up an ace, and added seven digs. Junior pin hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) matched Lyon's total with nine kills, managing the feat on .207 hitting. Junior libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) had a team-leading 15 digs and first year setter Emily Cordell (Crawfordville, Fla.) had 17 assists.

The match opened with a kill from Henn, but the Continentals responded with three kills of their own to drive the score up to 7-4 in their favor. A kill from sophomore setter Elena Timo (Bourne, Mass.) and another from Henn put the Lyons within reach at 7-6, but the Continentals went on a seven-point run to jump ahead 14-6. Two four-point runs from Wheaton put the Lyons ahead for the first time since the set's opening at 18-17. Lyon led the way for Wheaton over that run with three kills, while senior middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) added a kill of her own to help her side in taking the lead. A Lyon kill and a Hamilton attacking error saw Wheaton lead 20-18, but each side exchanged errors to tie on set point at 24-24. Hanson put down another kill from the middle to lead 25-24, but three straight Hamilton kills flipped the result, giving the Continentals set one, 27-25.

The second set began with a 2-0 Hamilton lead which was quickly erased as the Lyons went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by a Henn kill. Mazzanti recorded a kill on her own to tie the game at 5-5 after Hamilton pushed back with a few points of their own. A three-point run from Hamilton saw them drive their lead up to 9-6, which it drove even higher to 11-7 after a Wheaton attacking error. A kill from Mazzanti, a kill from Henn and an attacking error by the Continentals saw the Lyons draw within one point at 11-10. Hamilton again went on a big run, scoring seven points to Wheaton's three. The Lyons were able to once again make things close after Henn and Mazzanti each earned kills to make it 23-21, but the Continentals eluded them once more. Hamilton took the set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Wheaton found themselves down early in the third set, as the Continentals jumped out to a 7-3 lead. Following a service error by Hamilton, the Lyons scored two more points off of Continental errors to tie the score at 7-7. They managed to take the lead at 10-8 after senior middle hitter Julia Wingler (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) and Henn each knocked home kills. Hamilton came right back ahead after a four-point run of their own to lead 14-13. The lead changed hands once more as Wingler and Hanson earned kills and Hamilton made an attacking error, giving Wheaton the advantage at 16-14. Hamilton was able to muster yet another four-point run, regaining the lead once more. The set came down to the wire as Wingler notched a kill to tie it at 21-21, then Mazzanti sent one down to tie it at 22-22. Hamilton inched ahead with two points in a row, but Mazzanti was able to find one last kill to make it 24-23. It required a kill from Hamilton junior outside hitter Elodie McGeiver (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to end the proceedings, giving the Continentals the win and handing Wheaton the loss.

Wheaton will take on the hosting University of Hartford in the very next match in the tri-match in Hartford, Connecticut this evening at 7:00 pm. Hamilton will stay in Massachusetts for it's next match as it takes on Williams College a week from today at 7:00 pm.
