TRINITY, Conn. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team fell at host Trinity College (Conn.), 201.5-74, this afternoon at Trinity Natatorium in Hartford, Conn.
The Lyons drop to 2-6 on the season, while the Bantams up their mark to 4-7.
Trinity won 15 of 16 events on the day.
Wheaton's lone first place showing came in the 100-yard breaststroke behind a time of 1:01.46 by junior Brian Hixson (Scituate, Mass.). He also added a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley to give him a team-high 12 points.
Senior Anton Lopez (Oakland, Calif.) and junior Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) each collected a pair of second-place efforts for the Lyons. Lopez was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 22.29 and clocked in at 1:04.62 in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Cullinan touched second in the 100-yard butterfly at 53.35 to go with a second-place swim in the 200-yard butterfly behind a mark of 2:02.70.
Wheaton senior Sean Hill (Ellsworth, Maine) added seven points, including a second-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.97 and a third-place swim in the 100-yard freestyle at 49.21. First year Henry Wielgus (Pocasset, Mass.) contributed with a third-place effort in the 200-yard backstroke on a time of 2:04.57.
The Bantams boasted four swimmers with a pair of first-place finishes each. Senior Matthew Brown (Nahant, Mass.) scored top times in both the 1000-yard freestyle (9:56.35) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.02), while classmate Tadija Ciric (Nis, Serbia) turned in the top time in both the 200-yard butterfly at 1:53.28 and the 100-yard freestyle (48.64). First year Illja Tosic touched the wall at 21.77 to win the 50-yard freestyle and swam to victory in the 100-yard butterfly behind a time of 52.02. Junior Owen Schmidt (South Hamilton, Mass.) dominated the diving with a score of 335.39 to win on the one-meter board and tallied 341.32 points to place first on the three-meter board.
Trinity also had four competitors score exactly 13 points on the day with a first and second-place finish. Junior Patrick Cadogan (Sudbury, Mass.) and first year Ryan Kam (Newton Center, Mass.) combined to dominate the backstroke events with Cadogan winning the 200-yard race with a mark of 2:01.85 and placing second in the 100-yard event with a time of 55.09, while Kam touched first in the 100 on a time of 54.56 and was the runner-up in the 200 with a clip of 2:16.93. Sophomore Atticus Chang (Chatham, N.J.) took first in the 200-yard freestyle fueled by a time of 1:47.91 and was second in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:01.61. First year Weston Lowe (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) swam the fastest 500-yards in the freestyle with a time of 4:52.20 and was second in the 1000-yard freestyle, logging a time of 10:08.23. First year Jack Rinaldi (Staten Island, N.Y.) also collected 13 points, highlighted by the top time in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:00.91 to go with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and a fifth-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle.
The Bantams won the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:12.71, produced by Brown, sophomore Benjamin Broxson (Concord, Mass.), Ciric and Tosic. Trinity also opened the day with a relay win in the mixed 200-yard medley. Brown opened with the backstroke, before yielding to the women's team's senior Lauren Thomas (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) in the breaststroke. Ciric took the butterfly clip and senior Isabelle Tagliaferro (Bedford, N.H.) swam the freestyle anchor to combine on a time of 1:43.17.
The Lyons return to the pool on Friday, January 31 for Senior Night at Balfour Natatorium against Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m., while the Bantams travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on Springfield College on February 1 at 12:00 p.m.
