BABSON PARK, Mass. — Sophomore Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.) dominated the distance events with a pair of wins to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team in a 169-109 loss to host Babson College this afternoon at Morse Pool in Babson Park, Mass.
The Lyons drop to 2-4 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 6-2.
Wheaton won six events for the day.
Rice clocked in at 10:13.13 to win the 1000-yard freestyle for the Lyons, before taking the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.32. He added a third-place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke to give him 21 points to lead all competitors for the day.
Junior Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.) also scored in three different individual events for Wheaton, winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.27, after placing second in the 100-yard backstroke. He also finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke as part of a 16-point showing. Senior Anton Lopez (Oakland, Calif.) racked up 15.5 points, winning a share of first place in the 100-yard freestyle with junior Will Larson (Iowa City, Iowa) with both recording a time of 48.87. Lopez was the sole winner of the 50-yard freestyle with a clip of 21.47, while Larson was right behind him to place second.
Junior Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.25 and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke to score 13 points for the Lyons, while senior Sean Hill (Ellsworth, Maine) finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard butterfly.
Babson won both relays, opening the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. First years Thomas Ambelang (Bernardsville, N.J.), Nathan Huynh (Naperville, Ill.), Nehemiah Rhee (Paramas, N.J.) and Tommy Hannenian (Sacramento, Calif.) gave the rookie quartet a top mark of 1:37.54. The home team also closed the afternoon with a relay win, taking the 400-yard race behind sophomore Anthony Taslakov (Sherborn, Mass.), first year William Iglar (Marietta, Ga.), Hannenian and senior Pat Anutarasoti's (Bangkok, Thailand) combined effort of 3:11.46.
Taslakov, Anutarasoti and sophomore David Krol (Grafton, Wis.) each claimed first on two occasions during the meet for the Beavers. Taslakov won both backstroke events with a time of 53.88 in the 100 and 1:57.24 in the 200, while Anutarasoti placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.56) and the 100-yard butterfly (50.77). Krol ruled the diving board with first place scores of 299.20 on the one-meter board and 307.60 in the three-meter event.
Iglar scored 12 points for Babson, winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.71 and added a third-place effort in the 1000-yard freestyle, while first year Liam Maloney (Tampa, Fla.) topped the field in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.20 in addition to finishing fifth in the 200-yard backstroke.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Wednesday, January 22 when it heads to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 6:00 p.m., while the Beavers travel to Bridgewater, Mass. to compete against Bridgewater State University on January 25 at 2:00 p.m.
