NORTON, Mass. – Eight different swimmers scored first-place finishes in a 148-58 victory for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team over visiting Clark University (Mass.) today at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-3.
Wheaton won 10 of 12 events on the day, including five events featuring Lyons in the top 1-2-3 spots.
Seniors Colton LaBrecque (Vernon, Conn.) and Sean Hill (Ellsworth, Maine) and juniors Will Larson (Iowa City, Iowa) and Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) each tallied 13 points with a first and a second-place finish for the Lyons. LaBrecque touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.28 and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly. Hill logged the fastest mark in the 100-yard butterfly on a time of 54.47 and touched the wall second in the 1000-yard freestyle. Larson placed ahead of the field in the 50-yard freestyle behind a mark of 22.04 and was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke. Cullinan was the winner in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 53.37 in addition to a second-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle.
Wheaton sophomore Andrew Gust (North Andover, Mass.) racked up 12 points, including a first-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle after recording a time of 5:18.30. He was also third in the 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.), junior Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.) and first year Koby Wulfmeyer (New Paltz, N.Y.) all posted victories in the lone event that they officially scored in. Rice claimed the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:26.59, while Tran registered a time of 2:05.79 to win the 200-yard individual medley. Wulfmeyer finished ahead of the field in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.08.
The Lyons ruled the relays, winning both the opening 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay to close the meet. Cullinan swam the opening 50-yard backstroke leg, before yielding to Tran's breaststroke. LaBrecque kept the pace going in the butterfly stroke and Larson swam the freestyle anchor to combine on a time of 1:39.49.
Wheaton's time of 3:26.42 was good enough to post victory in the day's final relay. Hill opened the race with the first 100 yards, followed by Gust and sophomore Jadyn Arnold (Oakland, Maine). Junior Will Chappell (Worcester, Mass.) sealed the win with the final 100 yards on the anchor leg.
The Lyons return to the pool when they travel to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson College on Saturday, January 18 at 12:00 p.m.
