POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) had a match-high 16 kills to go with three service aces to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-13, 25-17, 22-25, 25-6) over State University New York Geneseo this afternoon during the second day of the Vassar Quad hosted by Vassar College at Kenyon Hall in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Wheaton won its second straight to improve to 2-4 on the season while the Knights dropped to 2-4.The Lyons hit .248 in the win.
Junior middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) and junior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) each added eight kills in the win for the Lyons. Hanson hit .538 and had a match best four blocks while Henn added a match-high four aces and team-high eight digs.
First year setter Elena Timo (Bourne, Mass.) and Ajsa Orbán (Budapest, Hungary) each had 15 assists while sophomore libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) added seven digs for the Lyons.
Wheaton scored six straight to cap a 10-2 run in the opening set taking a 19-9 lead and cruised to the 25-13 win in the opening set. The Lyons hit .519 in the opener.
In the second set, the Lyons used an early 6-1 run to open up a 9-5 advantage as Henn had a pair of service aces and a kill in the run. Wheaton added a 7-2 spurt taking an 18-10 lead as Lyon and three kills in the run for Wheaton. The Lyons won the second set 25-17. Wheaton hit .241 and had four aces in the second set.
SUNY Geneseo extended the match with a 25-22 win in the third set as they scored six straight taking a 15-8 lead. Wheaton closed to 21-17 with a 5-1 run, but the Knights held on to force a fourth set.
Wheaton scored the first seven points of the fourth set with a trio or aces by Orban. The Lyons leading 10-4, took control scoring nine of the next ten points for a commanding 19-5 lead.
The Lyons scored the final five points of the set to close out the match with Henn contributing a pair of aces in the final run.
