NORTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Lily Brown (Warwick, R.I.) netted a goal with just 4:33 left to play to provide all the offense the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 victory over visiting Keene State College this afternoon at Mirrione Stadium in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Owls dip to 3-1. The match was the first between the two schools since Wheaton registered a 2-1 win on October 1, 2014 in Norton.
The Lyons owned a 15-9 shot advantage for the match and was awarded one more corner kick (3-2) in the game.
Wheaton proved to be a second half squad for the third straight game. After each team matched the other with seven shots in the opening session, the Lyons owned a commanding 8-2 shooting margin in the second stanza and has now tallied nine second half goals out of their overall total of 10 for the season.
Junior midfielder Julia Sternat (Ellington, Conn.) notched her second assist of the year for Wheaton when she sent a short cross to her left to find Brown for the marker. Brown received the ball, turned around, took a dribble and lifted a shot just over the keeper's reach and under the cross bar for the only marker of the afternoon in the 86th minute of the match.
Keene State's best opportunity to score came in early in the second half when sophomore forward Allison Kenyon (Gilford, N.H.) ripped a shot into the air from the top of the box that Lyon junior goalie Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) snared out of the air, while diving to her right to keep the contest a scoreless stalemate.
Wheaton looked to score, just over two minutes later, when sophomore forward Mackenna Reynolds (Longmeadow, Mass.) found Sternat moving into the box with a cross that set her up with a shot that went off the hands of the Owl keeper, but the ball remained in front of her to keep the match without a goal.
Bandrup finished the contest with five saves for her second consecutive shutout and the fourth blank sheet of her career for the Lyons. Junior goalie Riley Andriski (Newmarket, N.H.) turned away a season-high eight shots for Keene State.
Wheaton returns to the pitch on Monday, September 9 when it travels to Roger Williams University for a 4:00 p.m. match, while the Owls head to Westfield, Mass. to play Westfield State University at 7:00 p.m.
