NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Assumption University, 6-1, this afternoon at Clark Tennis Courts on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons slip to 0-3 on the season, while the Greyhounds have won five of their last six and improve to 7-2 on the season.
Assumption swept doubles play and took five of six singles matches in a 6-1 victory over host
First year Laurence Bosmans (Lommel, Belgium), sophomore Caroline Mäder (Großwallstadt, Germany) and first year Ina Bechle (Weinsberg, Germany) were all double-winners for the Greyhounds with wins at both doubles and singles play.
Sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.)Â earned the lone point for Wheaton, winning the final match of the day at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-2, over Assumption first year Mia Monje (Worcester, Mass.).
Bosmans and Mäder combined for a 6-1 victory at number one doubles over the Wheaton junior duo of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). Bechle paired with first year Madison Ericson (Sollentuna, Sweden) in a 6-1 decision at third doubles over Lyon junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) and first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.).Â
Bosmans won in straight sets at number one singles over Greenlee, 6-1, 6-4, while Mäder dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at second singles over Wheaton sophomore Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.). Bechle earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision at number four singles over Lyon sophomore Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda).
Sophomore twins Carolina and Danielle de Souza (Joinville, Brazil) teamed for a 6-2 win for the Greyhounds at number two doubles over Haraj-Sai and Wilson. The sweep in doubles play gave Assumption a 1-0 dual match lead.
Sophomore Marie Knispel (Wolfebüttel, Germany) surrendered just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Greyhounds at number three singles over Ortiz, while Assumption sophomore Beren Vapur (Bursa, Turkey) came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at sixth singles over Brennan.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Wednesday, October 2 when it heads to the Brighton section of Boston, Mass. to play Simmons University at 3:30 p.m., while the Greyhounds return to action on the same day when they travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm College at 4:00 p.m.
