NORTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) tallied the only goal of the afternoon to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over visiting Brandeis University on Keefe Field in Norton, Mass. on the Wheaton campus.
The Lyons improve to 4-3-2 on the season, while the Judges dip to 3-2-2.
Wheaton controlled the match, owning a 22-9 shot advantage, including 11-2 in shots on goal. Brandeis held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Despite posting a 10-5 shot advantage in the first half, the Lyons went into the intermission with a 0-0 deadlock.
Ferrier finally broke through in the fourth minute of the second half for his fourth goal of the season. Senior back Ethan Alfano (East Greenwich, R.I.) launched a long throw from the right sideline into the box, where classmate Ryan Bell (Berwyn, Pa.) was camped on the right edge of the goalie box. The senior sent a centering pass off a header back into the box that ricocheted off a Brandeis player before going up in the air only to be settled by Ferrier, who whipped his right foot through for a shot that found the inside of the left post for the marker with 3:30 gone in the new half.Â
The Judges threatened the even the score in the 76th minute when first year defender Kaden Collins (Farmington, Conn.) fired a shot through traffic, but despite having his sight obstructed by the crowd, Wheaton junior keeper Michael O'Gara (Admore, Pa.) was able to stop the attempt and keep the blank sheet intact.
Brandeis looked to get on the board with one last-gasp effort after it was awarded a free kick at the top of the box. Junior midfielder Rainer Osselmann-Chai (Acton, Mass.) unleashed a shot headed toward the near left post with 2:35 left in the match, but O'Gara dove to his right to keep the ball out of harm's way and preserve the home team's lead.
O'Gara finished with a pair of saves to record his second shutout in as many games for the Lyons and the 12th during his time in Norton. Senior goalie Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa.) was outstanding for the Judges, turning away 10 shots on the day.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, September 28 when it hosts No. 11 United States Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at 3:00 p.m. on Keefe Field, while Brandeis hosts No. 20 Babson College on the same day at 2:30 p.m.
