Women's Volleyball Roars Past Gordon, 3-1

WENHAM, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team defeated host Gordon College, 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 28-26), this afternoon at Bennett Athletic Center in Wenham, Mass.

The Lyons win their third straight match to improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Fighting Scots fall to 3-6.

Wheaton used a furious comeback in the fourth set to erase a seven point deficit and supplant Gordon with set point, before ultimately winning the frame and the match. The Lyons hit .206 for the match, including .393 in the second set and .244 in the final frame, while the Fighting Scots managed just a .067 hitting rate.

Junior outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) led all players with 15 kills and added four block assists, two aces and a pair of digs for Wheaton, while sophomore right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) put down 12 kills on a .348 hitting mark to go with four digs. Junior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) swung for 10 kills and fell a dig short of a double-double with nine and added an ace and two block assists. Sophomore libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) got down for 12 digs and fired four aces, while sophomore setter Ajsa Orbán (Budapest, Hungary) set for 28 assists, picked up nine digs, got up for two block assists and served up an ace for the Lyons.

Senior outside hitter Joey Keltner (Anacortes, Wash.) led Gordon with a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs to go with an ace and two block assists. Junior outside hitter Maria Clarabuch (Sant Cugat Del Valles, Spain) put away eight kills and registered three block assists and a dig and sophomore setter Annika Schmitt (Quincy, Mass.) set for 17 assists in addition to three digs and an ace.

Mazzanti sparked a 7-2 opening run with a trio of kills for Wheaton, before Keltner put down a kill to pull the home team within 12-11. The Lyons scored the next four points to take a 16-11 margin and later maintained a 24-17 advantage. The Fighting Scots scored the next two points, before junior middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) gave Wheaton the set with a kill to make it 25-19.

Gordon scored the first two points of the second set, but it was the only lead of the frame for the host. The Lyons put together a dominant 9-1 stretch, fueled by a pair of aces and two kills from Lyon, to give Wheaton a 9-3 lead. The Fighting Scots later pulled within 16-14, but the Lyons scored seven of the next eight points, capped by a Henn kill, to take a 23-15 cushion. Gordon mustered two more points, before Wheaton matched it with two of its own to take the set and a 2-0 match lead.

The Lyons took an early 9-4 lead in the third set, backed by four kills from Mazzanti, looking for a sweep, but the Fighting Scots countered with an 8-2 run to take the lead for good at 12-11. Gordon held onto a 20-19 edge, before scoring five of the final six points to force a fourth set at 25-20.

Mazzanti helped stake Wheaton to an early 5-1 lead with three kills in the fourth frame. The Lyons maintained a 10-6 margin, but the Fighting Scots tallied seven of the next eight points to take a 13-11 lead. Keltner put down a pair of kills and served for an ace to give the home team the lead. It was all but a certainty that the match would go to a fifth set when Keltner swung for another kill to give Gordon set point at 24-17, but Wheaton roared back. The Lyons reeled off eight straight points, including three kills from Lyon and a pair of aces from Hochberg to take set point themselves at 25-24. The Fighting Scots scored two of the next three points to knot the match at 26-26, before Wheaton scored the final two points of the frame to take the match, 3-1.
