No. 19 Bowdoin College, 1-0, this evening at Pickard Men's Soccer Field in Brunswick, Maine.
The Lyons slip to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll, improve to 4-0-1.
Bowdoin held a 9-4 shot advantage, including 5-1 in the first half. The Polar Bears held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks as well.
In the 60th minute, Bowdoin broke a scoreless tie with the lone marker of the evening to come away with the victory. Junior midfielder Tyler Huck (Ross, Calif.) broke the deadlock after sophomore defender Keito Ishibashi (Bethesda, Md.) played a cross to him from in front of the net, before firing a shot through traffic that skimmed across the turf and into the back of the net.
Five minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Felipe Rueda Duran (Beaverton, Ore.) looked to give the Polar Bears the lead as he weaved through traffic in the box to launch a shot on net. The ball narrowly missed the top right corner as the game remained scoreless.
Wheaton threatened to get on the board in the 14th minute of play when senior defender Ryan Bell (Berwyn, Pa.) directed a header on frame, but was denied by the Bowdoin keeper.
Junior keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) turned away six shots for the Lyons, while Alex Ainsworth (Winnetka, Ill.) made a pair of saves to earn his second shutout of the year and the sixth of his career for the home team.
Wheaton returns to play on Saturday, September 21 when it opens the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference slate in Worcester, Mass. against Clark University at 1:00 p.m., while the Polar Bears head to Lewiston, Maine to take on Bates College on September 24 at 7:00 p.m.
