ERIE, Pa. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team was defeated by Austin College, 22-4, this afternoon in a Collegiate Water Polo Association match hosted by Pennsylvania State University Behrend at the Junker Center in Erie, Pa.
The Lyons fall to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in league play, while the Kangaroos improve to 4-10 and 4-2.
Four different players scored for Wheaton. Sophomore utility player Josephine Basco (Painesville, Ohio), sophomore center Issabel Babikova (South Portland, Maine), first year center Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) and first year attacker Ava Biancheri (Westborough, Mass.) all netted a goal for the Lyons. First year goalie Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.) made six saves for Wheaton.
First year attacker Caroline Armstrong (Houston, Texas) led all scorers with six goals for Austin, while first year attacker Morgan Evans (Houston, Texas) netted four markers. First year attacker Xytali Silkey (San Antonio, Texas) tallied three goals.
The Kangaroos netted the first nine goals of the match, fueled by two goals each from Armstrong and Evans to take a 9-0 lead with one minute to play in the opening quarter.
Basco netted her first collegiate goal with 7:19 to play in the second quarter to put the Lyons on the board and cut the deficit to 9-1.
Austin reeled off nine more unanswered scores, including a trio of markers from Armstrong and two more from Evans, to increase its advantage to 18-1 with 7:09 showing in the third quarter. Babikova found the back of the net for Wheaton at the 5:03 mark of the quarter, before the Kangaroos tallied the next three goals to push their cushion to 21-2.
Romo and Silkey traded goals to end the quarter and set the score at 22-3.
Biancheri netted the lone goal of the fourth quarter for the Lyons, while the Wheaton defense kept Austin off the board for the final eight minutes of play.
The Lyons return to action tonight when they take on Macalester College at 6:20 p.m., while the Kangaroos play host Penn. State Behrend at 8:00 p.m.
