NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team fell at Connecticut College, 19-3, this evening at Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn.
The Lyons fall to 0-6 on the season, while the Camels improve to 7-2.
First year center Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) led Wheaton with a pair of goals, while junior utility player Allie Taylor (Raleigh, N.C.) netted a goal. First year goalie Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.) registered seven saves for the Lyons.
Sophomore Ainsley Cornwall (San Mateo, Calif.), senior Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) and sophomore Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, Calif.) each tallied a trio of goals for Connecticut College. First year Maddie Baybeck (Ann Arbor, Mich.) added two goals as one of 12 players to net a goal for the Camels.
Connecticut College ripped off 10 straight goals to open the contest, including three each from Cornwall and Franco and two more from Sandull.
Wheaton got on the board when Romo found the back of the net with 1:37 left in the second quarter. Sandull countered with the final goal of the half for the Camels with just 14 ticks left on the clock.
The Camels netted the first four markers of the third quarter to increase their advantage to 15-1, including a marker from sophomore driver Melia Lorch (Encinitas, Calif.) with 1:42 remaining in the period.
Romo scored again for the Lyons with one minute to go in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 15-2. Sophomore Anna Taylor (Pleasanton, Calif.) answered for Connecticut College 55 seconds into the fourth quarter, before Allie Taylor tallied a marker just 53 seconds later to pull Wheaton within 16-3 with 6:12 showing in the fourth quarter.
Senior driver Gicel Zuniga (Norwalk, Conn.), sophomore driver Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) and sophomore defender Brooke Brandenburger (Sacramento, Calif.) each netted a goal to close out the scoring for the Camels.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 6 when they take on Austin College at 1:00 p.m. at a College Water Polo Association weekend at Pennsylvania State University Behrend in Erie, Pa., while Connecticut College plays Augustana College (Ill.) on the same day at the same place at 11:30 a.m.
