CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated by No. 11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 9-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble in Cambridge, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in league play, while the Engineers, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, have won seven straight and 10 of their last 11 to improve to 12-3 and a perfect 7-0.
Wheaton senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) won a total of five games between singles and doubles play to lead the Lyons.
MIT won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, heading into singles action, before winning six straight singles contests.
Mueller combined with first year Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) in an 8-2 loss at number two doubles against Engineer senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and first year Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.).
MIT first year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) did not drop a game in the opening set at number one singles against Mueller, but the Wheaton senior won three games in a 6-3 second set loss.
The sophomore tandem of Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) posted an 8-2 win over the Lyon sophomore duo of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) at first doubles. Junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) combined with first year Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) at number three doubles for the Engineers to register an 8-0 triumph over senior Zoe West (Queens, N.Y.) and junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.).
Lu lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number two singles for MIT over Greenlee, while Pados won at number four singles for the home team, 6-1, 6-0 over Wheaton first year Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.).
The Engineers did not surrender any games in their other three singles matches, winning, 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets. Deshpande recorded a win at number three singles over Lyon first year Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first year Nishi Gandra (Mason, Ohio) won at fifth singles over Hollis. First year Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) turned in a victory at sixth singles over Wheaton sophomore Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.).
The Lyons return to the courts tomorrow to host NEWMAC rival Wellesley College on the Clark Tennis Courts at 12:00 p.m., while MIT hosts Mount Holyoke College on April 23 at 3:30 p.m.
