WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team was defeated by Pennsylvania State University Behrend, 15-5, this afternoon at the CWPA Weekend hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at the Henry Memorial Natatorium in Washington, Pa.
The Lyons slip to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Collegiate Water Polo Association play, while the Lions improve to 2-8.
First year attacker Ava Biancheri (Westborough, Mass.) and first year center Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) each netted a pair of goals to lead Wheaton. Sophomore attacker Savannah Sedlock (Fairfax, Va.) scored her first collegiate marker for the Lyons.
First year Angelique Gadsky (Salinas, Calif.) led all scorers for Penn State Behrend with three goals, while first years Scarlett Hall (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Makenzie Rickerd (Rockford, Mich.) each netted a pair of goals.
The Lions tallied the first six markers of the afternoon, capped by a goal from Gadsky with 4:59 to play in the opening quarter. Romo put Wheaton on the board just 11 seconds later to make it 6-1.
Penn State Behrend strung together five more unanswered scores to increase its lead to 11-1 following a power play goal from Rickerd with 4:53 left in the second quarter. Romo found the back of the net with 3:12 remaining in the first half to cut the margin to 12-2 for the Lyons, before junior driver Nic Darrell (Perkasie, Pa.) gave the Lions a 14-2 advantage with a marker coming at 2:37 of the third quarter.
Wheaton scored three of the final four goals of the match to close it out with Sedlock registering her first score with 1:27 to go in the third quarter, before Gadsky tallied the final Penn State Behrend goal with 5:17 remaining in the contest. Biancheri scored twice in a span of 42 seconds to pull the Lyons within 15-5 before the final horn sounded.
Wheaton returns to play this afternoon at Henry Memorial Natatorium when it takes on Grove City College at 3:40 p.m., while the Lions play host Washington & Jefferson at 6:00 p.m.
