WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team fell to Grove City College, 19-4, this afternoon at the CWPA Weekend hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at the Henry Memorial Natatorium in Washington, Pa.
The Lyons slip to 0-4 on the season, including 0-3 in Collegiate Water Polo Association play, while the Wolverines improve to 2-5.
First year center Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) led Wheaton with a pair of goals. Sophomore attacker Savannah Sedlock (Fairfax, Va.) tallied a goal, while junior center Izabella Agraz (Moraga, Calif.) netted her first collegiate marker.
First year utility player Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa.) and junior driver Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) both scored four goals to lead all players for Grove City. Sophomore utility player Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va.), junior center Mikayla Zablocki (Kittanning, Pa.) and sophomore driver Candace Scalise (Clarence, N.Y.) each scored three goals apiece.
The Wolverines reeled off 18 unanswered goals over the first 25 minutes of play, before Romo cracked the scoring column for the Lyons with 5:43 left to play in the match. Romo found the back of the net again less than two minutes later and Agraz followed with her first marker with 91 seconds left in the contest to give Wheaton three straight goals to make it 18-3.
Kerr netted her fourth goal of the day for Grove City with 1:12 showing on the fourth quarter clock, before Sedlock capped the scoring with just 50 ticks left in the match to pull the Lyons to within 19-4 before the end of the match.
Wheaton concludes its day of action with a 7:30 p.m. match against Connecticut College at Henry Memorial Natatorium, while the Wolverines take on host Washington & Jefferson tomorrow at 10:15 a.m.
