NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team fell to visiting Connecticut College, 9-0, this afternoon at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons slip to 5-5 on the season, while the Camels extend their win streak to six straight and improve to 7-3.
Connecticut College swept through doubles play to take a 3-0 lead and did not lose more than four games in any match. The Camels won all six singles matches as well, winning four of them in straight sets.
Wheaton first year Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) was locked into the match of the day, but eventually fell in three frames to Connecticut College junior Walker Mulligan (Guilford, Conn.). Mulligan cruised to a 6-1 outcome in the opening set, before Murray roared back to even the match behind a 6-3 effort to set up the three-set grinder. Mulligan took a 5-2 lead in the third set, but Murray broke his opponent's serve twice to knot the frame at 5-5. Mulligan regrouped and won the final two games to take the set and the match.
First year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) took his Conn. College opponent to three sets as well. The rookie came out with all pistons firing to post a 6-1 first set victory at second singles over junior Jules Taylor-Kerman (New York, N.Y.), but his Camel counterpart bounced back to take the middle set without dropping a game. Taylor-Kerman's second-set momentum fueled a 6-2 third set win to take the match and give Connecticut College the fifth and deciding point of the dual match.
Taylor-Kerman combined with sophomore Sigmund Winiecki (Jaffrey, N.H.) to earn the first point of the dual match with an 8-1 effort at number two doubles over Berteaux and Murray. Winiecki gained a two-set victory at fourth singles with a 6-4, 6-4 showing over Lyon junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.).
Mulligan combined with James Serhant III (Hadley, Mass.) to earn an 8-4 win at number three doubles over Bor and Wheaton first year Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Connecticut College senior Aaron Fleishman (Brookline, Mass.) and first year Jared Leong (Petaling, Jaya, Malaysia) paired at number one doubles to turn in an 8-3 decision over the Lyon duo of first year Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.).
First year Arjun Premkumar (Bangalore, India) dropped just two games for the Camels against Galligo in a 6-1, 6-1 win, while sophomore Gavin Anderson (Avon, Conn.) posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at fifth singles over Van Dyke. First year Colby Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) closed out the dual match for Connecticut College with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number six singles over Wheaton first year Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas).
The Lyons return to the courts on Saturday, March 23 when they host Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Beard Field House for a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest at 12:00 p.m., while the Camels return tomorrow when they host New England Small College Athletic Conference foe Bates College at 2:00 p.m.
