NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team held visiting Connecticut College to just 22.9% (16-70) shooting for the game and 27 points through three quarters in a 75-52 victory this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons win their second straight game and improve to 3-6 on the season, while the Camels fall to 6-3.
Wheaton's defense was stifling through the first three quarters of play, holding Connecticut College to 20% or under in each of those periods, including a meager 13.6% (3-22) in the third quarter. The Lyons shot 51.9% (28-54) for the game, including a 58.8% (10-17) clip in the second quarter. Wheaton held a healthy 49-35 rebounding advantage and outscored its guests, 38-12 in the paint.
Junior forward Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) netted a season and game-high 17 points on 6-10 from the floor, including 2-3 from three-point range and was a perfect 3-3 from the line for the Lyons. She also pulled down five rebounds, blocked three shots and handed out an assist in 20 minutes off the bench. Classmate Madeline Duwe (Greenville, S.C.) netted 15 points and was also 6-10 shooting, including 3-4 from long distance, while adding four rebounds. Senior guard Abby Fernandes (Assonet, Mass.) filled up the stat sheet with nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks, while senior guard Greta Minos (Boston, Mass.) dished out a career-high nine assists in addition to scoring seven points, grabbing five boards and coming up with three steals.
Sophomore forward Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) led the Camels with 10 points and was a perfect 6-6 from the line to go with three rebounds, a steal and an assist, while first year guard Valeria Santiago Dedós (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) chipped in with nine points, three assists and a steal in 20 minutes off the bench.
Hunter converted a pair of free throws to give Connecticut College a 5-4 edge with 6:14 showing on the first quarter clock, but it was the visitors' last lead of the afternoon.
Wheaton put together a game-defining 15-2 stretch, fueled by 11 points from Keyter, to give the home team a 19-7 cushion with 91 seconds left in the opening quarter. Santiago Dedós knocked down a three-pointer for the final points of the quarter to pull the Camels within 19-10.
Connecticut College was unable to get on track in the second quarter, while the Lyons were red-hot, outscoring the Camels, 26-5, through the first nine-plus minutes of the period. Duwe led Wheaton's offensive explosion with a trio of three-balls to help boost the Lyons' lead to 45-15 with 56 ticks left in the opening half. Junior forward Charlotte Head (Holden, Mass.) made a fast break layup, as time expired, for the Camels' seventh point of the quarter to cut the deficit to 45-17 at the intermission.
Fernandes restored Wheaton's 30-point advantage with a layup at the 6:54 mark of the third quarter, before Connecticut College ripped off the next seven points, including five from Hunter, to pull within 47-24 with 5:09 left in the quarter.
The Lyons closed out the period with a 12-3 blitz, paced by four points from Duwe, to give Wheaton a commanding 59-27 lead through three quarters of play.
Sophomore guard Mary McClintock (Essex Junction, Vt.) converted a layup with 8:56 to play in the game to give the Lyons their largest lead of the day at 61-27. Junior guard Kennis Jasperson (Sacramento, Calif.) later sank a pair of free throws to maintain a 71-41 margin for Wheaton with 4:01 showing on the fourth quarter clock.
The Camels went on an 11-2 run, led by five points from sophomore guard Lily Funk (East Rochester, N.Y.), to cut the deficit to 73-52 with 51 seconds left in the contest and give them 25 points for the quarter, which was just two shy of their total through three quarters combined.
The Lyons return to action on Monday, December 30 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. To take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 4:00 p.m. EST, while Connecticut College heads to Providence, R.I. on December 9 to play Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 p.m.
